With the money they have and the recruiting base in TX, I feel like they could survive and possibly be better independent. They’d get to schedule better teams than Kansas and Iowa state to pump up their schedule.

no. They haven't even won a big 12 title in ten years.

I dont see why they would when they get to double dip on both money from the big 12 and the LHN

However, as an A&M, I want them to because it would be amazingly entertaining to see the children lose their minds and throw everything at the wall to keep UT in the big 12

Notre Dame basically had to affiliate with the ACC for football.....so no Texas couldn't go it alone.

They’d have to negotiate with bowls to get access, which isn’t as easy as you’d think.

BYU has done it but those are a bunch of lower tier bowls who put into a contract “We will take BYU in X year if they are eligible.”

Texas would be locked into a lower tier bowl each year unless they either have access to another conference’s bowls, like ND with the ACC, or make it high enough in the standings for a playoff or New Year’s Six bowl.

Somehow, I don’t think the Big 12 will be letting them share bowl slots if they ditch the conference.

Why would Texas want to be independent, when they have total control of the Big XII?

Also... yes Texas takes in a lot of cash. However their athletic dept is still a dumpster fire, and ESPN is bleeding cash on the LHN.

They could if we were back in the heyday of independent teams twenty years ago. But if you aren’t in a conference, or named ND, you aren’t going to make it.

Texas isn't a dominant team in their own conference, much less nationally

I swear I like to flame Michigan fans for delusions of grandeur but if Texas were even half as good as its fans think they're the most underachieving program of all time

It has nothing to do with winning

ND was terrible for over a decade

It has to do with a following and Texas could absolutely Excel as an independent

They are more valuable than ND

TOP SCHOOL ATHLETIC REVENUE 2017
Total
1. $214,830,647

By reference, Notre Dame is #7 at $118 (and they had their own TV Network in NBC for years.)

Texas hasn't been successful with a dedicated ESPN network.

ND, on the other hand, is still in league with NBC to show all ND football games. Why does that work? Because of the nationwide network of Catholics who eat this stuff up. Is any other college that appeals to people in every state? And if you aren't a fan, you tend to grumble quietly. From Rudy to other older football movies...it united a fan base.

Texas? Heck their next door states aren't their fans, nor are their kin folk. Tens of thousands of alumni, but not spread all over the US.

Mandatory aggie joke: the Aggie moved from Texas to Oklahoma and raised the IQ of both states.
