Please don’t be TL;dr or sarcastic in this thread. It pretty emotional

I live in Destin and I like to walk everywhere because I like getting my steps in to hit 12,000+ per day for exercise

I walked up to the gas station tonight to get some beer and dip and I come across this dude wearing a back pack and holding a duffle bag on the way back to my place. I immediately had my guard up while passing this guy on the same sidewalk. This dude could rob me, etc etc

He asked me how far down was the Greyhound Bus Station... I told him Destin does not have a greyhound bus station... you have to go down to Ft Walton Beach. He broke down.

He lost everything in Hurricane Michael including his work truck, house, all of his tools that his dad and grand dad gave him and all of the other tools he bought throughout the years. He has nothing. He was renting the house and the insurance company paid the owner and the owner is just going to take the money and run.

He has been walking from Panama City (not PCB) - Panama City for weeks trying to get to this bus station so he can go back to Atlanta to stay with family. I guess the Panama City bus station is destroyed.

He had a backpack and a duffle bag with him. He said that’s all he had left. He was just walking to get to the bus station.

Me, I’m kind of freaking out if I am getting played or a robbery is about to happen.. I felt it was 100% sincere.

I told him hey let’s walked together to the store.. follow me.. I went to the ATM.. got out $50 for him.. called a taxi... let him pick out a hotdog and a water.. asked him if he needed cigs.. he said nope, I just want to get home.

When the taxi arrived, I told her where to go and any leftover money out of the $50 to please give to him

The moral of the story here is that the government and media wants to push racism down our throats. I just don’t see it. We are all people trying to help each other in life and just live life.

When that taxi arrived, I’ve never received a hug bigger than what this random guy gave me. He stunk dude. It was awkward to me but the tears were real with him.

I’ll never see this guy again in my life.. but it felt special, even though I thought I was potentially going to get robbed, to help another American out when needed and he turned out to be the sweetest man ever who just lost everything in his life while trying to make a living. He was broken.

I walked home and just broke down with tears.

This wonderful man worked hard his entire life and lost everything in one day.

I’m struggling with this

There's a dude that creeps around the Walgreens at Perkins and college that asks for money every time I go there. He says he works at footaction and he'll give me a free pair of nikes if I just give him a twenty. He drives a somewhat new GMC Sierra

It’s just hard to translate good deed/experience to standard message board post, so don’t take it personally.

Interesting story and I do think you did a nice thing. The paragraph about the media and racism is a bunch of self righteous nonsense though. There are a lot of people not looking to “help” others out. The media doesn’t fabricate stories of people killing their spouse and children and so on. There is a lot of evil.

What ATM doesn’t require you to take out money in $20 increments?

He's been walking for weeks to get from Panama City to Destin? The Oregon Trail took four months.

Maybe it was Tyler Perry doing a social experiment and you're about to be rewarded handsomely.

Black, Atlanta, it all kind of adds up.

So this guy is trying to get to Atlanta to stay with family? WTF the family can't come pick him up instead? Must not want him to stay with them

Let's get to the important stuff. Do you have pics of the taxi driver lady?

Good for you. You did a nice thing. However, the OT is probably the wrong place to come looking for a pat on the back.

Also, you should have bought that dumbfrick a map. He's walking west, when Atlanta is north and east.

Thefricked up part is that you could have died. Despite that Never forget they/we are all in this world together and some acts of kinds go along way.
Its also why I hate traveling with my mom, she always gets emotional and tries to help the world. I was in san diego whole foods eating and my mom and sister bought sandwiches for people outside. Locals prefer it if you dont contribute to them.
Either way if you want to help work at a local charity, something organized that properly evaluates the needs of people.

Don’t listen to these people. You did a good thing.

I have an Indian lady $20 at Walmart yesterday. She was holding a sign that said “lost my job, need food and diapers” her kids were sitting in the grass playing a board game someone bought them.

Some people get unlucky and need help

Why is the owner responsible for insuring his tenants stuff? Ever heard of a renters policy?

Owner isn’t screwing the guy over, the guy’s lack of proper insurance is screwing him over. shite like this pisses me off because the blame is being pointed everywhere but where it needs to be. This man was not prepared for this yet it is everyone else’s fault he wasn’t prepared?

Not saying you didn’t do a good deed, just saying it shouldn’t be society’s responsibility to pick up the pieces of every single person, especially when they didn’t prepare at all.
