In California's never-ending quest to tax everything, there are new reports that the liberal state may soon levy a tax on text messages.
California state regulators are working on a plan to charge cell phone users a fee for text messaging, all in the name of collecting taxpayer money to pay for programs to make phone service cheaper to low-income residents, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

Business groups, including the Bay Area Council, California Chamber of Commerce and Silicon Valley Leadership Group and others opposing the idea, calculated the new charges for wireless consumers could total about $44.5 million a year.
But they add that under the regulators’ proposal the charge could be applied retroactively for five years — which they call “an alarming precedent” — and could amount to a bill of more than $220 million for California consumers.

Someone needs to shoot California in the head.

I'd just use WhatsApp to avoid the tax

Right, there are so many other ways to communicate with people now that you don't even really need to text.
Still a stupid tax though.

I'll begin investing in carrier pigeons and smoke signal classes

That's not what the article says... You just have to read until the end and stay focused.

This bill will help blunt the impact of the federal tax plan on everyday Californians by protecting funding for education, affordable health care, and other core priorities

I'm sure they'll find ways around that. Like an expensive flat tax on messaging apps per month

Seems counterproductive if poor people with free Obamaphones have to pay a text tax
We are told to believe they are starving as they obesely waddle through the food stamp line with a bluetooth headset glued to their ear that is connected to the iPhone in their hand with the well-manicured fingernails

You wish the world's 5 largest economy would burn off the map?

So tax them in order to save them from taxes?

California is awesome. The people can be dumb, but the actual state is awesome. Try traveling before making stupid comments.
ETA: It's comical that this gets 5 downvotes. The non-travelling southerner is such a true stereotype.

Well it's not a tax for people to waltz into a T-Mobile and ask for free shite.
I forget where I am sometimes, though.

Well, what do they mean in regards to the "federal tax plan"? The one that no longer uses their state tax as a federal deduction? Another federal tax plan?
