Rays new stadium deal appears to be dead

LAS VEGAS — Hillsborough County officials hoping Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred would help consummate the deal for a new Rays stadium appear to have struck out.
Manfred, in a strongly worded letter sent today, said the framework of the deal lacks specific details necessary for him to "understand the merits and feasibility" of the proposal as well as "the actual level of commitment" from the public side.
Further, Manfred addressed the looming deadline in the three-year window to let St. Petersburg officials know if they will find a new home in Tampa, writing he was "puzzled by the decision to inject me publicly in the process" with only weeks remaining.
Hillsborough County Administrator Mike Merrill said last they included Manfred in the process since he "has influence" on these type of deals and has to approve it. Though the deadline with St. Petersburg is Dec. 31 and an extension would have to be negotiated, Merrill said Tampa officials could keep talking with the Rays until late March.

I can't believe how difficult it has been for MLB to run a successful franchise in the state of Florida. Sure, the Marlins have won two titles but the fans never really grew

Florida is the transplant problem on steroids with a ton of retirees from NL/AL East markets.

That should be a GOOD thing! It means that if you could simply build a base of local fans that occupy 50% of your stadium, you could then get up to 80% filled for games involving your AL East rivals. No one wants opposing fans to outnumber home fans but asses in the seats means $$$ is being made.

They gutted both teams shortly after winning them and replaced them with glorified AAA teams.

Montreal would be a terrible idea in my opinion. Keep the franchise in the USA or if anything Latin America. I agree, either move the team to Las Vegas, San Antonio, Nashville or Omaha...yes Omaha. If that doesn't work, move them to San Juan. Every one of those cities has a nice ring to it with Rays.

Fund it yourself if you want a new stadium. Stop robbing the taxpayers to subsidize a billionaire's vanity project.
If you can't afford to build a stadium, you can't afford to own a team.

Would the Jacksonville area have been better than Tampa area for the team when they were added as an expansion team?

both the Yankee's and the Red Sox get that extra home game feeling - with several other teams (O's, Jays) not too far behind.
Games at the Trop aren't the greatest, but they aren't the worst either, especially after bridging the walkway around the outfield..
Once the announcement was made of the pending move to Ybor, many fans living in Pinellas won't make the 20+ mile drive to a run down area of Tampa...

Yes they are. Easily the worst stadium in baseball. Lighting is terrible, concourse is rundown and the catwalk interferes with balls in play

And why do you think they gutted them? Because the fans were not showing up in numbers despite having a good product on the field.
