They are everywhere in North MS and not enough hunters.
They really should just up the limit even though they don’t enforce it.
ETA: for the OP, I’d choose a .308 if you want one gun for everything.
I however do not cling to the one gun option as I had, prior to boating accident, around 7 deer hunting rifles.

Yep, 30-06. Short or long, they die.

I’d say 30-30 but even in heavy timber you may get a shot over 100 yards. I’d say 180g 30-06
If you can’t see past 75-100 yards I’d go with a slug gun

30-30 lever with iron sights is also fine!

The best gun... timber!
Everyone wants to talk caliber, but that is the least important aspect of a short range gun.
And which GUN is best will depend on if you are stand hunting or doing some stalking.
Weight, length, action are all more important than if you are shooting a 338 or a 30-30.

7mm Magnum in heavy timber, heavy brush or heavy rain. The honey badger of deer rifles, it don't care.

I agree with what you’re saying, however this isn’t for “shooting into brush”, it’s for being able to get an ethical shot off quickly in a situation where you may only have a couple of moments to take a shot.
Or to put it another way.............a gun with open sights, which my normal rifles don't have
