The President's club is so exclusive and rare that only 44 people in nearly 250 years have membership in it and only 5 of them are alive today. It's exactly who state funerals were intended for.
Senators are impressive but 1,300 people have served in the senate. Dilutes the prestige. Senators have no business have a glorified state funeral like they were POTUS.

It will go on for longer than I want to watch. GHWB was a patriot and he deserves the attention but I'll pass.
FWIW McCain had used up his hero card long ago. He was a pompous arse and a horrible Presidential candidate. Would have lost in Arizona had it not been for his wife's money.

In Louisiana, we did have a long serving Senator that became Senate Pro Tempore.
I have wondered and searched for news clips of former Louisiana US Senator Allen Ellender. His funeral was in Houma. I have wondered how much press coverage this got. I know this was 1970’s. So no 24 hour cable news cycle to fill with tributes and other talking head worship like McCain got.
President Nixon and Vice President Agnew were in attendance. So far my internet sleuthing has yielded just a few black and white photos of Nixon and other leaders walking to St. Francis in Houma. I also heard stories about a “black phone” that was installed in the church for the president to use in case of an emergency. He was buried at the cemetery next to the hospital near downtown Houma.

The only funeral that will be as long as Mccain's will be Odumbfu*ck's. He will give his own eulogy. It will be 1,000,000 words, and 999,000 of them will be the word "I".
