Auto Store Battery Testers

I have a 2016 Pilot Touring that has been acting strange. About a month ago after driving for six hours, I pulled over to get gas and it would not restart. I was able to jump start it and took it to Advance where they said battery was good. Tonight the same thing happened after driving for thirty minutes and stopping to get gas. This time I took it to Auto Zone and got an all good on the battery. It seems really weird that it still has to be jumped off just like a bad battery but runs great for weeks in between. How accurate are those portable testers they use at the stores? All symptoms point to bad battery but their test say good.

Check you negative terminal for corrosion could be the problem.

Same thing happened to me not long ago. Changed the battery anyway and have had no issues since. Not sure if the testers are unreliable or the person operating the tester

yep, either corrosion on terminals or voltage regulator inside the alternator. Clean the terminals well and put back on with some clean grease on them to help prevent the corrosion. If it happens after that then it probably is the alternator. There is an outside shot that the cable from the alternator to the battery is bad but most likely is corrosion.
Edit to add that if the battery is not load tested the test is pretty suspect. The proper way is to use a load tester. put the load on for about 10 seconds to remove any surface charge then put load back on based on tester instructions. If the battery tests bad with the load, it is bad. It may start the car but if you drive with lights, etc. it may pull it down to where it won't start/

Odd that the battery is only 2 yrs old and going bad.
Maybe it's the charging system or a slow drain on the battery.

The cables have zero corrosion on them and everything is clean as a whistle. This car doesn't have many miles and everything looks brand new under the hood.

a bad connection to battery or main wires will do that. jump starting it welds a new connection for a while until it gets a bad connection again from vibration.
remove battery connections and clean the contacts, also bend the main wires and see if they are stiffer then they should be or sound or feel crunchy indicating corrosion inside them.
lastly the voltage regulator in alternator may be getting stuck and not charging the battery, that also can be temporarily fixed by jump starting

If you have an AGM battery, those testers don't always diagnose them correctly.

It is an AGM battery as the new Pilot's have to have this to help with the auto start feature from my understanding.

You can get a multimeter for like $15 to test your alternator output. Check for loose connections or corrosion throughout the charging/starting system. Clean everything and tighten it back down. You can bring your car or battery to a good battery place to have it load tested. IIRC, it takes a minute or so once it's fully charged.

Just chiming in to add that I have a 2016 Pilot also and had to change my battery a few months back. Noticed it was cranking really slow for a few days then went on start it on a Sunday morning and it just clicked. Took it out and brought it to Napa and they tested it and it was bad. I thought it was odd for a two year old battery to go bad so soon also.

On a lot of newer cars, when the battery is bad, the alternator goes into a sort of safe mode so it doesn't burn itself up trying to charge a battery that is failing. Not really bad but on its way out. The cars computer has accessed the battery and has put the alternator into safe mode. The car runs like this for a while, alt. is not charging battery at a normal rate and it dies again. You jump the car off and the cars computer sees good battery amps and says, hey we can start charging again, and then the cycle starts again. The next time the car wont start, if you can test the battery before jumping the car off ,the battery should test bad. Put a new battery in it, AGM batteries act weird when they start to go out.
