I watched to the conclusion of the storylines in season 2 but haven't liked the first half of season 3 leading up to the "twist". According to redditors, season 4 was one of the best. It does make it easy to keep watching with how good Claire Danes & Mandy Patinkin are..makes up for the horrendous writing of the daughters storylines.

How many seasons before the writing starts to dip?

Depends. How much longer can you tolerate these facial expressions?

Once they realized making Muslims look bad wasn't cool anymore, and shifted the focus to everything under the sun being America's fault.

The first few seasons were great, then it went off the rails for me and I just watched it because my wife wanted to keep watching, but I enjoyed the last 2 seasons

Season 4 was my favorite, though I think people here don't like it much. Seasons 1-3 are greatness. Season 5 was very meh. Season 6 almost lost me totally. Season 7 was close to getting all the way back on track. I thought it dealt with current events pretty well, and left out a lot of political undertones it tried to make in Season 6.
