I have what I guess would be called a utility knife. The blade is about a foot long, it has a flat tip like a screwdriver, and one side has a sawtooth edge. I've never been able to find anything about it online. Someone suggested it might be a search and rescue type tool for a civil defense unit. A relative brought it back from WWII.

That's a red cross dagger.

The double headed eagle was more common in that region before the Nazis.

Ivory handle? Swastikas everywhere! Don't ever run for public office unless, of course, you are a democrat. Then you could get away with it!

Been collecting WWII militaria with my dad since I was about 13 years old. Been to quite a few collectible shows and learned a lot.

Does the number of tassels mean anything? The acorn looking pieces on the end are hard as hell, wonder why...

What the Germans did was reprehensible, but you have to admit, the iconography of their uniforms and weapons was b.a.!

PS - did the USA get the eagle idea from Germany or is that a blasphemous question?
Germany was unified as a nation in 1873, before that it was a bunch of separate German States with Prussia being the big brother.

Prussia had been using a black eagle in their heraldry and symbols since the early thirteenth century.

So, I guess you could say the Prussians had the jump on us using an eagle as a symbol.

I took this picture of a Nazi-era eagle statue in "downtown" Berchtesgaten in August:
