quote:I don’t believe taxation is theft, although I hate paying them, but if by “more or less” you must mean it like “it’s 100% less and 0% more, there it’s also 100% more or less.”
It’s more or less the same thing as saying that taxation is theft.

The correct answer to this question, reached by Proudhon but not Locke, is that the only way to move from universal common ownership to individual private ownership is through theft.
Why does this writer assume that universal ownership is the default?

quote:I kind of get the idea from like a beginning of a civilization point of view since someone or some group (nation) decided to take the claim over some land. So maybe they technically stole it from everybody else at that time, whether they wanted it or not, but it doesn’t really matter now since neither the theif nor those they stole it from are long gone.
Why does this writer assume that universal ownership is the default?
It’s a pointless argument anyways since it ignores the realities of human behavior or any intelligent life’s behavior (an animal claiming territory and killing a rival), but it’s really pointless now.

Liberty-respecting and state theft are common themes and buzzwords for internet libertarians.
I’m willing to concede OP leans more towards anarchy than palatable libertarianism and may even be close to completing the circle to outright socialism and communal ownership of everything, but we’re really just splitting hairs there.
It’s all ridiculous as a real-world political philosophy. Which is why I support seizing Madagascar and giving them their own real-world laboratory
What is sad is in thread about stupid people, this is the dumbest comment of all.

If these guys want you their logic I’ve brokered millions in stolen goods. I’m a badass.

I like bringing these concepts to the micro level.
Walk up to these fools and take have their drink or take half the money in their wallet and watch them become fierce defenders of private property

If your starting position is that of common/universal ownership, then the argument in the OP makes sense. The issue is that there is no reason to justify universal ownership instead of non-ownership. In a default non-ownership paradigm (which is what you find in mainline libertarianism), one acquires initial ownership by control/utilization/creation. Once initial ownership is established, ownership is voluntarily conveyed.

quote:But then we’re back to the taxation is theft issue. I just bought a house. I have no issue with the idea of knowing that until I pay off my loan, that the bank has a claim in my property.
Do these idiots not realize they can act like adults and buy property?
On the other hand, while I get property taxes and will always pay them (although the suck) and I even see the value in what they provide, it doesn’t feel like I own my property if it can and will he seized if say 50 years from now I decide to stop paying my property taxes, even after giving them $400,000 or $500,000 maybe more up until that point.
That does feel like theft moreso than even income taxes since I can either (not have any income and/or have a low enough income not to pay them) or at retirement only pull my Roth and limit what I pull from the taxable retirement until the point I would owe money, or I can mentally discount my income the value after taxes.

Precisely.
We could declare all housing free for everyone tomorrow and the same retards would then start complaining about WHERE they got placed and how unfair it is and how racist and discriminating the selection process is, etc.

Place op on the spectrum. Since when do socialists or even anarchist care whether something respects liberty?
It’s a bunch of hodge podge poli sci buzz phrases.

that is the killer with property taxes
of all the taxes, my preferred tax was sales until that shite with GA recently made me realize how that can really hurt

I mean if someone wants to argue something is so easy, and doesn’t want to buy a place like a normal person, then let’s see how easy it is and have him prove it.

I think I was reading Marilyn Von Sant when I was given this gift: If you evenly divide all assets between all people, once only, within a few months everything will be exactly the way it was.
Life just has winners and losers, depending on what you think "winning" means.

While a vast oversimplification, in my opinion, I think the sentiment is valid.

And just looking it up, apparently it’s not even a sale tax. They have to pay a “Title Tax” based in the car’s value.
It seems to me that, other than notable exclusions like groceries, a sales tax should be uniform and consistent to be fair and effective. I get "sin taxes" but at least those are typically for things that aren't necessities like a car and those aren't really on expensive items
