I figured this would turn into a caliber war . I think I'm going to go with a 6.5 creedmoor. Christmas is hopefully bringing a Tikka T3 Hunter 308 so I'll be covered there. Preciate it fellas.

.260 and especially .280 are fine deer calibers.

I shot about 30 rounds through my new Tikka T3 6.5 creedmoor stainless a couple of weeks ago. It's pretty good, and will probably get better with more shooting.
On the same day, I shot my new Savage Axis .22-250, this is without a doubt, the most accurate off the shelf, centerfire rifle that I have ever shot.
Guess I'm going to have to get 1 in .308. or 6.5.

I might have had a change of heart. Think I'm gonna go 308 for this one and then the 6.5 with the Tikka.

This thread is terrible you realize that OP? You went from wanting a short barreled 100 yard deer gun all the while having a .270 already, to picking 6.5 creedmore as your gun.
You picked probably the last caliber anyone would recommend for your OP.
Eta: Not to mention, to do the 6.5 justice you need to put a higher power scope on there, which is not ideal for close woods hunting.

I mean i cant fault him. i mean just recently i planned on a cheap 300aac pistol build and once i started piecing it together it totaled 1050.

true.
.30-30, .44 mag or a slug shotgun for close stuff.

See above baw. My 270 is perfectly fine and I'll for sure hunt with it still. I just want a new gun that's shorter and wanted a caliber that's new to me. Looking at a 308 with an 18" barrel right now.

I have nothing against either of them. But heres my logic on why he shouldn't get either of them. I have personally witnessed with my own two eyes, two deer being lost to a .260. This was taking my little cousin hunting. I saw the impacts through binos. We never found either of the deer. Solid hits but no blood trails. Im sure people kill plenty with it but im not sold on it yet. and as far as .280... why not just shoot a .270? I'm not sure where the advantage in a .280 is

Heavier bullets, better SD and BC.

OP, you mentioned you had a 45-70. In thick brush, that would be about perfect especially for 100 yards and in.

Personally go with 6.5 creedmore its quite the rage these days. And FYI if someone offers you a .260 or a .280 you punch them in the face and don't be friends with them anymore.

OP do whatever you want.
There is quite a bit of derp in this thread.
If you want a 300 blackout in a bolt action get it, itd be a neat gun.
It'll be fine for 100 yard hunting suppressed or not. Use the supersonic rounds with a 110 vmax and dont worry about it.
Is it the best tool? No
Will it work? Absolutely.

I've made 3 gun decisions based off the thread and just money I want to spend on guns:
1) .308 for the gun I'm buying today
2) Tikka 6.5 after christmas
3) Another AR build with a 300BLK

Again it’s your gun and money I don’t care, id honestly buy the 300 Blackout first as you already have a .270. Unless you are building a 800 yard gun or something. But for 100-400 yards the difference between the .270, 6.5 creedmore, and .308 for deer hunting is negligible.
I love guns as much as anyone, but I’ve never understood the need to own multiple guns between the range of .243 and 30-06ish with 3x9 ish scopes. Sure there’s a little difference, but not nearly enough to worry about.

Your charts don't compare the same info.
They actually do. They show a 200 yard zero for 4 different barrel lengths for the grendel and a 16" barrel for the 308. The 308 chart shows a list of different ammo for 200 and 300 yard zero but the data is there.

The 6.5G drops less
Out of a 16" barrel this isn't true. The charts show that, but do a little research on the grendel round and barrel length.
I was looking for comparable 100 yard zero charts but could only find 200. I understand that's not applicable to the OP's ask.

I'm sure he has considering he builds them for a living.
