I moved to SC and will be doing my hunting upstate and the vast majority of the shots will be within 100 yards. I was going to buy a 35 whelen and use it for primitive and regular gun season, but primitive up here is black powder only so I don't want necessarily want a single shot. I went to a local gun shop looking for a 30-30 or something similar, but the shop owner recommended a 300 BLK in a bolt action. I have no experience with this round and was curious what the board thinks about it for shots within 100-150 yards. Will be deer and hog hunting.

There are probably better calibers for a bolt gun doing that type of work.

if you aren't planning on silencing it, its not worth it. No other reason to get one other than pure novelty. Sure it'll kill a deer at 100 yards but it wasn't meant to be a 100 yard deer rifle. If you're wanting something in .30 cal then get a Savage .308 for under $400 with scope. Personally go with 6.5 creedmore its quite the rage these days. And FYI if someone offers you a .260 or a .280 you punch them in the face and don't be friends with them anymore.

Forgot to mention, I'd like a shorter barrel. Somewhere between 16-20 inches.

Get a 6.5 Grendel bolt gun. I vote CZ 527 American. It does have a 24 inch barrel though. You can get it cut down from a reputable shop though. Or go CZ 527 carbine in 7.62X39.

What other guns do you have?

For 100 yards there's absolutely no reason to get fancy.

I would just get a short action with one of the popular calibers.

99% of people are better off getting one really nice deer gun in the normal calibers with a really nice scope and use it every hunt, then buying 8 different guns for every possible situation.

Unless youre buying an AR thats gonna be difficult. I'd look at youth rifles and usually they will come with an extra adult stock for when the youth grows up.

.270, AR15, and a 45-70 for rifles. I know I'm covered for what I want, I just want a new gun. The reason I wanted a shorter gun is because the guy that is showing me around does a lot of stalk hunts and they shot 3 bucks last weekend all within 50 yards while walking. I'd just like one with a smaller body than my 270.

i agree with this except for it isnt just novelty. it will do some work within 150 yards.

If you really want a 16" bolt action for deer get a 308.

for a 100 yard and under deer gun get a 44 mag

The grendel is a good round but needs a very long barrel to compete with a 16" 308.

Ruger 17110. Look that one up, LOP is a little shorter but I have a big framed good friend that shoots his all season and it’s his go to rifle.

What 45-70 do you have? If it's one of the shorter Marlins, (not the 26" Cowboy) I'd just use that.

If you just want a new gun, Ruger makes their American rifle in 6.5 Grendel. Bolt gun, 18" barrel, accepts AR mags.

I've seen ~16" Marlin 336s in the past. Would make a wonderful 100 yard deer rifle.

300blk is a nice cartridge designed to the constraints of the ar15. If you aren't using an ar15 there are better options IMHO.

The 6.5 Grendel outperforms the 308 in flight out of the same length barrel. The 308 will obviously carry more impact energy because it shoots a heavier bullet with more case capacity, but no length Grendel barrel will close that gap, enter the 6.5CM.

my custom 300/221, aka 300 Whisper, aka 300 BO. Purchased to mainly shoot hogs and have fun with. Not sure I'd use this to shoot deer since I already own other rifles that are dedicated for deer hunting.

I'd consider a 12 or 20 gauge rifled slug gun. Great gun for 120 yards and under in thick stuff.

Would open up your options to hunt in places that only allow slug or muzzleloaders also.

Thanks for all the info. I'm mainly looking for a new rifle because I've only bought pistols and a couple shotguns the last couple years. I'm looking between the Grendel and Creedmoor

Nope, not at all.

I have the Ruger American Predator in .308

18" barrel
just put a new Magpul American hunter stock on it.

Waiting to shoot it.

There are also a few rifles called Scout Rifles. Ruger makes one. It would fit the bill as well.
