I lived with a teacher for 18 years (my mom).
She worked her arse off, no doubt. But her working in the summer was at a summer camp for extra money. She spent a few days getting her classroom ready. Oh, she wrote her entire science curriculum herself, and won awards for it. (Obviouslt she taught at private school)

Most careers probably seem better than they really are when we're about 19 years old and choosing them.
I'm sure some choose this path because they want to influence and work with kids. I have to admire that trait in them, even if that desire left them many years ago. I've never been that noble.
Most careers are harder than they look, but many get easier as you progress. If they're still in the classroom after 25 years, they're working almost as hard as when they started, and no doubt, fed up with the lack of discipline, bullshite bureaucracy and standardized testing.
Then again, most of would be fed up with our job if we didn't "progress" into other aspects of the industry.
They deserve to be able to complain, just like everyone else. But in the end, we all make our own decisions.
On a different note, you never hear them complain about that guaranteed early lifetime retirement stuff though that I'm convinced will be the death all of our American governments.

Well, for example, Texas TRS requires deductions for retirement and each teacher is subject to federal deduction as well. Upon retirement, Texas teachers cannot draw Medicare even though they contribute the same as any other employed citizen.

As a teacher I can verify this. My teacher friends blast FB during teacher appreciation week about how under paid they are and how important their job is and how they change the world. I tell them all the time yes some teachers are under paid for the job they do and some do change the world, but most are just like you and sit there all day and collect a check.

My wife (no pics) is a teacher. She was an oil/gas consultant before. Salary is a quarter of what she made before - but the work load was killing our family life.
We laugh our asses off at the teachers that complain about long hours and paperwork. They have no clue.

First off, my wife and I teach a and we make $150,000 combined in a year and work 190 days. We are very happy with our pay but we have both found positions that don’t require us to do much work at home or over the summer. Next, as you’ve probably guessed, we don’t live in Louisiana so I can’t speak for systems there, but if you think teachers only work during school hours, then you’re crazy. The good ones, which would include most of the teachers I work with, put in countless hours at home, even during the summer. I wouldn’t teach if I had to put in the hours most of my coworkers put in.

Lots of salary professions do the same, teachers seem to be the only ones that bitch about this.... They are up there with Nurses in Facebook whining.

Try again, Einstein. Most teachers do NOT get raises, even if they are promised. The individual school boards never, ever give them raises on time and when they actually DO get the raise it's a mere fraction of the raise they are supposed to get.

Know any teachers? Know any teachers who don't take work home with them on the weekends? Know any professionals who take work home with them every friggin' weekend? Know any professionals who pay for their work material out of pocket but NEVER get reimbursed for it? Know any professionals who's client's parents call them up at home and bich and whine and complain and threaten to sue them because, oh, their little angel couldn't have done that???? OMG...
If you guys think Teaching is easy, or it's plush job or not hard or anything like that, go sub for a couple of days. You'd change your minds faster than that new LSU helmet changes colors.

Most salaried pros in my area make $80k and up. Teachers make about $52k. I used to be a salaried professional and never had to work nearly as hard as a teacher. I could also run errands, go to the doctor/dentist, etc. during the day and could shoot the shite with co-workers and post on the drop.

There also aren’t many jobs where you have to do most of your work at home and on the weekends. You people are nuts if you think it’s 9 months and done. Also, how do I make up the 3 months of pay that someone wants to equate with an accountant if I’m working 9 and cannot get a three month job that will allow me to take 9 off every year?
