Why was Virginia Tech playing at Old Dominion

Cupcake games are normal, but why was VT playing at old dominion? The same thing happened to Virginia tech when they were ranked number 13 in 2010, they went to play James Madison at JMU and got upset. What is the deal with their AD lining up away games against cupcake teams? I’m not concerned about the upset itself, just what tech was doing not playing at home in the first place.
Also, tech is the only team I can recall that has played an away cupcake game other than Miami a few years ago.
Anyone know why?

I'm assuming it's a 2 for 1 type deal but I'm not sure

Oklahoma state played last season at south Alabama.

I think I read it has something to do with recruiting for va tech to go play out there. They have a bunch of players from the norfolk area so they can all go play in front of the hometown fans/family. Looks like that plan really backfired on them tho

Is that just the AD for old dominion doing a good job or tech’s doing a bad job? Considering I’ve seen it with tech twice. And they lost both
Didn’t think about recruiting reasons. Makes sense

No, it doesn't
It's a 5 hour drive from ODU to Blacksburg. Do these people not have cars?

I live in North Carolina near the VA border. VT scheduled it because they recruit the area heavy. Apparently their AD tries to schedule away games in areas they are trying hard to recruit so local high schoolers get to see them play.

and to think VTech still has to go play there 5 more times

Maybe some don’t, I don’t know. I can see it both ways.

Because the hampton roads area of VA has 200 times more the D1 recruits as the blacksburg area. and there are tons of VPI alums in the hampton roads area as well

Remember when you could promise a game in a recruit's home state as a recruiting pitch on NCAA football?
Damn I miss that game.

In addition to some of the examples already listed:
Miami played at App St and Toledo
NC State played at Marshall last weekend
and we have games scheduled at ECU and App St.
I don't think it's as uncommon as people are assuming.

I had to go google this to believe it. Old Dominion must have the best athletic director in the country to pull off this kind of deal. 10 years ago they didn't even have a football program. They've only been in FBS for the past 5 years. Yet somehow they managed to land a deal to get one of the ACC's top programs to agree to play in their 20,000 seat stadium SIX times

I think UNC has played at ECU recently too. ECU put up around 50 or 60 IIRC

VT saw it a cupcake win and additional exposure for recruiting the 757 area. It helps to have recruits and family all together at once.
Needless to say it back fired lol

I'm looking at VT's future schedules:
LINK
They played ODU at home last year and play them at home again next year. So I guess it was a 2 for 1 this time around. But if you look at 2022 and beyond they have 8 games scheduled against them, 4 home and 4 away through 10 years. Not too different than what LSU and Tulane attempted to do in the mid 2000s.

It must be a Virginia thing? I think I remember UVA travelling recently to William & Mary, University of Richmond, James Madison, or some other smaller in-state Virginia college.
