Library Board to spend $1.7 million to buy land - Spinosa wins again

1. How much money does the library board have? They just keep spending.
2. Spinosa promised to donate this land in exchange for the zoning on Rouzan. Edited for clarity. Spinosa has since sold most of his interest in Rouzan but profited from the sale of the land upon which the library was supposed to sit. If you remember, he pulled a bunch of shenanigans when they tried to take his promised donation.

Baton Rouge's library board unanimously signed off Thursday on a $1.7 million land purchase to build a new branch in the Southdowns area. The proposal for the long-awaited South Branch will now go to the Metro Council for final approval.
The undeveloped site is near the intersection of Perkins Road and College Drive on land in the Rouzan development. Library officials looked to build a branch in Rouzan nearly a decade ago, and the idea recently resurfaced when the development came under new ownership. The property owner agreed to sell the land at a discount of $20 per square foot rather than $25.
In addition to the main $1.6 million property, the board agreed to buy some smaller plots nearby for about $100,000 more, raising the total site to about two acres. Authorities reasoned the extra space would give them some cushion during construction or may allow future additions.

Why do we need more libraries? We have plenty

1. The Library has a separate mileage tax voted on and approved several times by the EBR parish citizens. It is to be used to build new facilities and maintain and upgrade. They have built new libraries all over the Parish as they were supposed to. 7 million dollars have been set aside for a decade for this particular branch.
They aren’t perfect. They raised a mileage, as they were allowed to, that I disagreed with and the board has a bit of infighting from time to time, but overall they have been good stewards of the money and are much more transparent than some other recipients of taxpayer dollars. Council on Aging for starters.
The Metro Council sees them instead of good stewards as hoarders and are trying to steal money from them to use at their discretion. This is nothing more than a money grab and should not be allowed to happen. I voted to support the Library for the reasons above. Not for some council members pet projects or to fill a hole somewhere else.
2. Spinoza no longer owns this property and has nothing to do with this transaction. His original proposal was to allow the Library to build within one of his commercial buildings, which the cost would have been paid by the tax. It was small and would have been attached to other retail which was not optimal. This particular piece being bought is probably the best of the whole Rouzan property with a great corner location. Enquist and Landry are discounting it because they know it is a good addition to Rouzan and they also try to be good stewards of the developments they do. They also have the pockets to do things right, which Spinoza never really had.
This is a win for Rouzan, Southdowns, the taxpayers and anyone else who knows the value of good libraries within a community.
This is specifically why this tax was passed. If you don’t like it, you are certainly entitled, provided you are a registered voter in EBR Parish, to vote against.
And for the record I am not “pro-tax.” I am not a fan, nor did I support Council on Aging and CATS and will vote against them when they come back up for renewal. I do however realize that if we want to live in a community that is worthwhile it costs money. Libraries cost money. Roads cost money. I supported the Greenlight Plan for the above reasons as well and it was spent exactly as we voted for. I will support the new one for the same reasons as we need roads more than most things.

Spinoza is a crook. He killed off a number of contractors on his Perkins Rowe project.
How he still is in business...... money greases the wheels....

Are they tho? How so? For drag queens to read books to kids? Have hobos look at porn on the public computers?

The library board is spending money because they have the money.
They are building as promised, but their projects are over the top. I've also heard they are over staffed too.
They will continue in this manner as they have the money.

Spinosa sold all but a commercial tract at the front of the development. This is the new owners.

Yes you are. I have never met Tommy Spinosa in my life and understand the feelings about the guy.
But the fact remains-as you apparently didn’t read my post he has nothing to do with this property or transaction. He gets no money.
And if drag queeens are reading porn to children at the Library that is news to me. And someone link me to the overstaffing.
You people are funny how you just make up shite and really don’t look at problems or situations before spouting stupid shoot from the hip stuff.
I suggest actually visiting a library and see for yourself what is going on. They stay crowded with people. My kids use them all the time and have for many years. I use them myself from time to time and have all of my life.
