GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the advice Klark. My wife quit before we had our kids. She didn't smoke near as much but she still struggled with it. Once we started trying to have kids, she was able to just stop because kids was something she really wanted. I guess I should have more supportive and am now way more impressed by what she did. So she is helping me through this.

I had gone 54 hrs with no cigs and had a shite morning at work yesterday and went across the street and bought a pack. Got so down on myself and was like why fricking even try if this is gonna be the cycle and have smoked 7 cigs since lunch yesterday. Woke up this morning and was brushing my daughter's hair before school and it hit me again. I broke the rest and flushed them. Bought some gum on the way in this morning and it's all I can think about is lighting up. Like I'm having trouble trying to type this out clearly because my brain just feels overloaded or something. Anyways, I now realize I'm rambling nonsense, but I've come to the conclusion that I'm done with the damn things and appreciate the advice, kind words, and even the smartass responses. I grew up in a military/police family and respond well to tough love. Thanks guys.

After 20+ years of smoking at least one pack per day I quit smoking on March 13 of this year so I have been smoke free for 6 months this week. I used the Nicorette patches for about 3 months and progressively stepped down from 21mg patches to 7mg patches. I also chewed Nicorette gum when I had a craving. I also got a prescription from my doctor for the Nicotrol Inhaler to satisfy the hand to mouth craving. I still chew gum when I get a craving or am stressed but I will also go days without chewing the Nicorette gum. Despite what others have said these products helped me to quit. Also, I stayed away from alcohol from March up until the first LSU game this year as I used to smoke like a chimney when I am drinking. With all of that said, you need to make up your mind that you are going to quit and stick to it. These products can help but it is ultimately up to you and your desire to quit. You can do this. Good luck.

dude do not hesitate to use a nicotine substitute...as i said before the juul pen has worked for me so far. i was irritable and yelled at everyone the first two days, then after that its been a piece of cake

i smoked a pack a day for over twenty years, maybe close to 30. lets say 25 years...thats 9000 packs of cigarettes, 180,000 smoked at at minimum $45,000 spent. i spent $45,000 to destroy my health...

go get some nicotime gum, or lozenge or inhaler. the juul is $30 and its tiny...nobody will know but you and you'll feel better

Try the Juul. Haven’t smoked a cigarette since I started using it. Take the difference in costs an put it in a savings account.

If you're a dude, honestly just put them down and never go back. Don't bend to peer pressure - just make a commitment that you will neither buy nor bum cigs.

Now, I'm a militant anti-smoker from birth, but I'm telling you from talking to all the men who have successfully quit (and I'm talking cats with minimal relapses), the overwhelming majority just put them down and walked away.

Women need more help weaning off - gum, patch, Chantix, something - and dudes have been helped by that, but I think it may be hormonal or the nicotine gets stored in fat (women are fatter than men, all other things being equal). And, women's brains are wired differently. Cigs are strange because women generally don't have the some problems with addiction that men do, at least as a group.

But, seriously - just stop. It's up to the man in the mirror.

this may be a super unpopular opinion. by all means downvote away.

and this isn't to say that the accomplishment of moving from cigarettes to a nicotine gum/patch/lozenge or vaping isn't an accomplishment in it's own right.

but if you have the will power and motivation, you should quit ALL nicotine. I for one know that isn't easy. But it's freeing not being tied to a habit, period. Not having to think:
"when will i run out of gum/patches?"
"I only have this much vape juice left"
"i gotta run to the CVS i'm running low on gum/patches"

and all the small responsibilities to keep those habits up. it's a noticeable cost savings to just quit it ALL too.

no to mention. most of the Nicrotrol and Chantix type drugs are CHEAP as frick if you have good insurance and find rebates online. I think i get my Chantix for ~$20. And i only take one if i'm going to be drinking. So that last me 2-3 months.

just a thought. but regardless. all of those options are probably better for your health long-term than cigarettes.

Lozenges worked great for me

I used the Lozenges as well. I would recommend buying them from Wal Mart rather than CVS or Walgreens. They're a lot cheaper. You can get a pack of 108 for $32 bucks ($50 or $60 at CVS), and it should last almost two weeks. Start with the 4mg and ween down to the 2mg, then once you feel the cravings go away quite the Lozenges.

Chantix and no drinking for 60 days. Went to gym instead. Smoked for 25 years - pack and half a day. Haven't had one in over 4 years. I have a cigar twice a year just because I can!

Best of luck to you. If I can do it anyone can, including you.

this is how i quit...every time i had a craving, i'd put on gym shorts and tennis shoes and go run 2 miles...every time.

replaced the behavior. your body is just looking for some satisfaction. you can give it the satisfaction with a cigarette or with some endorphins from running...

OP, if you really want to quit, it should be easy. But you have to REALLY want too. You can't be quitting because you its a waste of money, or because its bad for you, or so your kids don't start smoking, etc. You have to get to the point where you aren't quitting for other people or other reasons, but you are quitting for yourself! Once you get to that point, it shouldn't be hard. I'm sure cigs don't give you withdrawals like quitting roxies (opiates), so it should really be all mental for you, but you need to be at the point where you mentally really want to quit and for the right reasons.

Smoked 24 years. Quit cold turkey 3 and half years ago. I tried other methods over the years but cold turkey was the only way it stuck.

Do you smoke weed too? Use it as a crutch. Used to load a bowl every day and every cig I’d crave I’d take a nice hit and hold it in as long as possible.

Also doing 25 pushups or drinking a glass of water every craving helped. Def try cutting back as much as possible before taking the plunge. Cold turkey is difficult and is a better approach if you’re just trying to quit for say Lent or something.

Try and cut back the situational smokes i.e. smoking while driving, after a meal (the hardest to give up imo), before bed, first thing in the morning ( ) etc

Good luck

Im 33 too, smoked 15-24 near a pack a day. Sept 4th was 9 years since my last one. You got this!

Quit cold turkey and take up a hobby. When I quit dipping, I quit cold turkey and it worked. It was rough and I was a grouch but it worked. Everyone I know who has successfully quit smoking/dipping, did so cold turkey. Good luck.

It is VERY tough to quit smoking, so, stay strong and don't let it beat you.

If you slip up, then BOUNCE BACK as soon as possible.

I convinced myself that I loathe cigarettes more than almost anything else in the world. It has been 21 months since I've had a cigarette. It honestly hasn't been that hard. But I do feel sick anytime I smell them.

I've heard Psilocybin(shrooms) works pretty well, too
