I'm 33 now and been smoking regularly for about 8 years now. I would smoke socially when drinking throughout school and at parties after college, but now I'm up to a pack a day and find myself just not enjoying it at all. It has started to impact my teeth and I've only had 2 cavities my entire life before the past couple years. I find myself looking at the time at work always to figure out if it's been long enough to have another smoke.

Also, getting older and having kids has made me think about my own mortality and want to see my kids grow up and become happy adults. So I want to extend my time here as much as possible.

Now I've tried gums and patches and they just don't stop the cravings and I end up obsessing over smoking, then beat myself up when I give in. Any of you have success stories or tips on what to do when it's all I can think about? TIA and I know smoking is trashy...

I don't smoke but I watched my dad quit in the sixties. He smoked the unfiltered humps. He tried cutting back and such and then one day we were driving down the road and he rolls down the window and threw his cigarettes out the window.

Cold turkey after about 20 years.

I know a few people who have successfully used Chantix (sp). It did give them crazy thoughts and dreams, so if you are already a little wacky or depressed, I wouldn't recommend it.

In the end, it's all about will power.

When you walk up to the gas station counter, don’t buy cigs? Can’t smoke something if you don’t buy them.

Lozenges worked great for me, gum was like pulling out fillings and patches not enough when stress was up on some issue.

Pop lozenge as needed, eventually breaking 2mg in half for use. There is the argument that you are shifting addiction but it simply is easier to wean of the lozenge than the cigarette, at least that is my experience, worked quite well.

I did not hurry the process at some point you just will stop lozenge use

If you can't quit cold turkey for your kids, nothing posted here will change your mind.

My mom tried everything with no success until she ended up in the hospital with flu complications made worse by smoking. That's all it took. 3+years later, not a single cigarette.

They work for sure. You may still want to smoke but it won't be an intense nicotine craving. It'll just be the habit of actually smoking and that will go away in a couple of weeks.

Vape. Turns out nicotine is actually pretty harmless. Its all the other shite in cigarettes that is horrible for you.

Yeah its douchey to vape but better than cigs.

I got an app that told me how much I was saving. That money started adding up very quickly. I did the patch for two weeks (that was more mental than anything). I read this book:

Allen Carr's easyway to stop smoking

This biggest thing I realized is you will CONSTANTLY think about smoking (the good and bad) for the first couple of weeks. It seems like it's all consuming. People smoke just to stop the "voices". But the voices get quieter and not as often and eventually just stop. And it's really a lot sooner than you think...but you have to fight through the first 2-3 weeks. You need lazer focus on a positive habit.

I’ve been smoke free for 5 years now after smoking for a long time. Nicorette mints helped me. Took 3,2,1 in consecutive days and that was it. The biggest thing is fighting through the triggers. Waking up, eating a meal, driving, drinking, going to bed. It was t easy, but having the will power to stop is key as well. You have to want to do it.
