Relatively recent LSU grad living in Atlanta and I'm coming down for the game too with some LSU/UGA fans. LSU's campus/game day atmosphere are second to none, but Baton Rouge is pretty meh compared to Athens. Here's where I'd say:
Restaurants:
Chimes should be no. 1 destination, even if you have to wait. It's an LSU landmark.
Bars:
If you want to go to a college bar, go to Bogies. If you want the post-grad young alumni scene, I'd say Ivar's, the Bulldog or downtown. Downtown has a nice stretch of bars if you want to bar hop, but the crowd is very hit or miss. I like Happy's and Boudreaux & Thibodeaux's personally. Avoid Tigerland.
For game day, I'd tailgate around the parade grounds and check out Mike's habitat and the band marching down the hill a couple hours before kick. I'd also get in the stadium early to see pregame.
Fingers crossed it's a night game so you can really see the true Death Valley/LSU tailgate scene, but this has a 2:30 p.m. kickoff written all over it. Still should be an awesome atmosphere assuming we have one loss or less going into the game. If we beat Auburn this weekend, it will be insane.

Fred's isn't the best bar, these are graduates, about age 24 I'd assume. I grew out of Fred's and all of Tigerland by the time I was 21. The Bulldog is a far nicer bar with far more beer, a better crowd, and no chance of fights or shootings.
Also to the guy who said downtown is dead probably hasn't been since about 2012. Theres about 15 bars and 30 restaurants along with a bunch of hotels. If you want a concentration of bars go to 3rd St downtown. City Bar is really popular and the line is normally really long to get in, Boudreaux and Thibodaux's usually has live music and has an upstairs bar and balcony as well, Blend is an upscale bar/restaurant concept at night, probably not what you guys want but it's there. The Bald Eagle is a dive bar with a pool table in the back. Happy's is a nice bar with an arcade room and a large back patio with a pretty big stage. Tsunamis is a rooftop sushi bar, fantastic place for drinks in a beautiful building. The Watermark hotel has a beautiful bar inside it called The Gregory, I've never had to chance to go though. Jolie Pearl oyster bar also has live music on weekends, I don't eat oysters but I've heard they are pretty good. Driftwood opened after I moved so I haven't been either but it's one of those industrial gastropubs from the looks of it. Lots of beer. Bengal tap room is something new to me too.

(Assuming we’re talking about Highland) Plenty of people recently. My recent visits have seen a decline in quality. A lot of focus has been put towards Creole Cabana, so I’m sure that played a part.
What is Creole Cabana?

Thanks for all the tips guys. Much appreciated
I always did like UGA fans, respectable, not conceded, classy, and just always looking for a good time.
Instead of bringing a tent as long as you can take a few tiger bait chants and a little fun trash talk you can walk into just about any tailgate and be catered too. You gotta go see Mike the Tiger too!

Stay off of any street named after a US President or a US State. Oh, and any street named after anything related to automobiles.
Also, do not go for a ride on Scenic Hwy. It is, in fact, not scenic.

If you all are looking for something a little more laid back, you might stay at chimes and drink at the bar or head right next door to Barcadia (I haven't been to the BR location, so someone that has might be able to give you more insight on if this is a good idea).
It's been a long time since I've been but we stopped going because the service sucked. I know they changed ownership so no idea if its improved.
For an alternative to Tigerland I'd reccomend the Perkins/Overpass area. Ivars is always packed with people OPs age. Then you've got Zippys for late night food and/or margs. Overpass Merchant is right there too which has good food and drinks. And just down the road is Uncle Earl's and Bulldog. Bulldog is a good choice if you are a craft beer drinker.

Bogies Friday night for a bar.
Chimes is right off campus and offers one of the best experiences for LSU and Louisiana food. I’d recommend going Friday night because Saturday will be slammed at chimes.
Enjoy yourselves. We have a laid back atmosphere when it comes to drinking. Let the good times roll brother. Don’t get butt hurt when people Tiger bait you. It’s all in good fun.

Its started to go back downhill again since they quit turning a blind eye to open containers. It was a great spot to bar hop a couple years ago, but its lost its luster.
Still, Happys and Boudreaux&Thibedeaux's are still good places to hang out.
Oh, and don't go to City Bar, unless you're a tool.

It's great just don't take any kids. Not really a family atmosphere.

North of campus can be a bit sketchy, but I lived there for two years and I personally had no problems, if you have to go in that direction, just be careful, and avoid it at night if possible. It's honestly fine during the day.
For food near campus, like people said, the Chimes is a very solid choice. There's also Louies for greasy breakfast food, Koi for asian food, Inga's for sandwiches and you can't go wrong with Pita Pit for a quick bite. The original Raising Cane's is also in that area.
For bars next to campus, Barcadia is a nice place. Good atmosphere and plenty of arcade games. Chimes has a good beer selection and I think a new bar just opened up on Chimes Street, I forger what it's called.
Here are some of my other favorite food options farther away from campus:
Pizza: Red Zeppelin on Perkins or Schlits and Giggles either on Perkins or Downtown.
Burgers: Fat Cow on Highland, Your Mom's on Burbank, or Breck's Bistro on Burbank.
Chinese: Nine Dragon on Burbank (crappy looking little hole in the wall place, but the coconut chicken is perfect).
Mexican: Superior Grill on Highland
Ribs: TJ Ribs on Acadian or Siegen
