Rewatched this recently, I think it’s seriously underrated. Nothing happens in the movie at all other than people talking in rooms yet it’s more tense, dramatic, and entertaining than most anything you see today.

The UN Security Council meeting scene and the scene with McNamara chewing out that admiral for firing on the Russian ship are great.

I love it, I could watch it once a week
Wife thinks I'm nuts and it's the most boring movie of all time

My wife and I generally like the same types of movies and TV shows, but she feels the same way about this movie and Zodiac. Everytime I watch she sighs, rolls her eyes, and leaves the room.

"Are these twenty millimeter or forty millimeter sparrows, sir?"
Indeed a very good movie.
The Cuban Missile Crisis is largely unknown these days. I remember my dad telling me about trains passing though Abita Springs carrying tanks and artillery on the way to Florida in case we had to invade. He was thirteen at the time, and said for a kid, it was both a scary and exciting time, but for the adults, it was only scary.

I liked the 1974 TV movie The Missiles of October better.

That's a good one, too. The full movie is on YouTube.

Thank God trump was not around for it.
Not kidding, I think there is a 90% chance nuclear war would have occurred and wiped out hundreds of millions if trump had been in JFKs shoes.
Cuban missile crisis has always fascinated me. As has the Russian sub commander who surfaced instead of launching when we were dropping depth charges on him. The man that saved the world...
Anyway, I'm not sure I've seen this film so about to watch it on amazon prime now. Just purchased it. Hopefully I havent seen it, I've seen a lot of stuff on the subject. My personal favorite is The Fog of War.

It sucks the Kennedys' dicks too much (to be expected, given the author), but it still is awesome.
ETA: Interesting read on how much Kennedy dick sucking has gone on and what the real story is: LINK

If memory serves me, McNamara came up with the idea for the blockade and therefore deserves more credit than anyone. Other than the Russian sub commander who is like literally the biggest hero in human history.
Just started watching.
Just started watching.

I liked it quite a bit.
My only problem is that they illustrate the bulk of internal conflict in the form of alluding to the military-industrial complex boogeyman. I am unsure if that or Costner’s accent was more based on reality.

Just finished it. I have seen it before I realized but long time ago. Still great.
110% chance most of us would have never existed if bonespurs had been in charge. That stupid ignorant pile of shite would absolutely have acquiesced to the joint chiefs and ordered the air strike and invasion exactly 30 seconds into the crisis triggering the nuclear war that was so narrowly avoided. Annoys me even more after watching that movie that we now have such an incompetent and spineless pile of shite in office now.

You....you do realize that the movie is a fictionalized dramatization, right?
Not to say that there weren’t war hawks but do you realize that Kennedy himself had to be persuaded from escalating to invasion right out of the bat?
And the entire situation was him mishandling Cuba at every turn? Even denying missiles existed up till the U-2 confirmed it?
And that the proximity to nuclear war is from the chance of the Americans launching a first strike? We were at the highest level of readiness ever.....the Russians did not escalate their alerts as tensions rose.
That scene with the scared shitless female Russian diplomat, that was because she probably thought we were coming for them.
Also, McNamera is portrayed as one of the “good guys” in the film but in reality suggested false flags against G-Bay as a pretense to invasion.
The MIC’s disdain of Kennedy is well documented.
And Kennedy did eventually get us out of the mire of his own creation.
But let’s not pretend the lines were as clear as the film made it to be.
