I just purchased tires and installation from a local dealer for my wife's car. After I arrived home I realized that one of the tires looked different than the others, and discovered that one tire was mounted properly and the others backwards. I have the same tires on my car which were installed by a different dealer three years ago, and those are also mounted backwards. The tires are asymmetrical, not directional, and only have a very small "inner" or "outer" marking on the tire to tell you the mounting direction. I plan to get the tires rectified on my wife's car, but I never noticed issues on my car.

What issues occur when you mount asymmetrical tires backwards?

It amazes me how two different dealers in the tire business can screw up the fundamentals of mounting a tire.

Take it back and have them redo it.

Have you noticed if you get much better handling in reverse?

Wouldn't asymmetrical also be directional; not for tire construction, but for performance?

Assumed they are installed backwards it is just a loss of performance whether in handling or water shedding.

Directional could result in a failure such as this...

Well that has not happened to me yet, knock on wood. Is it too late to get the three year old tires remounted? I put 40K miles on 65K warranty tires. Do you get to a point of no return and have to replace?

They do not have an arrow on them pointing direction.

The tire itself wont suffer any ill effects but your wet driving performance will suffer. The directional part of the asymmetrical tire is designed to evacuate water on a wet surface so you run the increased risk of hydroplaning. That said, asymmetrical and directional tires are designed for sporty vehicles which means the average driver will probably never utilize the full potential of the tire's or cars capabilities, so you might not notice a thing. It'll just look weird.

Do you not rotate asymmetrical tires?

No, you rotate them. If they have a directional aspect to them, you just go front to back with no crossing.

A tire tech mounted them. You can't really expect much

You should be able to rotate them normally. The outside portion of the tire will always be on the outside, no matter how you rotate them

You should be rotating them anyway. Easiest way to have them "remounted" in the right loaction.

You know you can’t put a wheel on backwards, right?
