Burrow doesn't have to be great when his first game is against a cupcake... LSU 31-13.. p.s. the turnover chain will be non-existentent. I tried hard not to be biased either

He cannot be anything near below average if you want to sniff a W in this game. I can tell you that for sure.

Also, you have an OC who hasn't been in that role in 20 years. That'd concern me a little.

If we can score 21pts, the Canes are in deep trouble

Well written. Accurate substantive points...would gladly read other posts from you. However, I'm sure the goons on this board are going to treat you badly. Canes vs. Tigers is a killer matchup...kind of like a bowl game to start the season! Cheers, mate!

Burrow will be under pressure. Your O line is considered a weakness. I expect us to expose that with relentless pass rush

I expect we will try to get the ball out of Burrow’s hands quick to negate your pass rush. I also think (read hope) we improve our screen game and can use that to expose an aggressive defense. I think it’ll be a one score game, but I think we pull it out.

Miami isn’t good. If LSU loses to them then it’s going to be an ugly season for the tigers.

Miami 24

Unless a TD comes on defense or special teams, I highly doubt you score 24

Mainly taking a look at the LSU offense vs Miami D and some keys to the game.

You list a lot of good points, and objectively, you're right to pick the strengths and weaknesses going in. I can certainly see how Miami CAN be favored, based on experience vs inexperience.

Being objective in return, here's the key I look at:
quote:

Now here is where I have my concerns for my team. The interior of our line is quite thin. I expect LSU to try and establish a power run game early. Especially with a new QB, getting in to 3rd and short situations will be critical to start the game.
We here at LSU are giddy with Burrow being some super QB, but honestly, I doubt that will be the case.

Looking at things- if Les Miles were still the LSU coach, LSU would be favored, because Miles pounded the ball up the middle without hesitation vs anyone. And it worked vs everyone BUT Alabama, and it did work vs them a number of times (we played an OT game a couple years ago, where we had a 11 play, 80+ yd drive, all on runs).

People say "well, Les is gone, LSU ain't that team anymore". Les didn't start doing it with Fournette and Guice, he did it every season, because LSU's base talent at OL and RB was geared that way. He did it with no-name backs.
Prior to Miles, we had Saban, and Saban did this too. Same approach... strong defense to keep the game close, power runs to wear down the D and take control late.

We have a "new" offensive coordinator, Steve Ensminger. He's an old guy, with an old-school background, who's been around the program under Miles a few years. He knows the personnel, and his era of football was... 70's football. Same approach as Miles and Saban.
We also have a strong defense and coordinator in Aranda.

In other words, it shapes up to be "same ol' thing" for LSU: defense to keep it close, pound the ball against Miami's weakest point- interior line- and build from there.

To me, the key is to hang around long enough to wear down your run defense. If you force us to play catch-up, I think we're screwed. But if we can stick around and land those body blows all game long, I think it pays off for us in the end.

Turnovers are the biggest danger for us, and I expect that the staff will play it close to avoid that.

We are good. In comparison to LSU, we return more starters. We had more wins. We even had a common opponent last year, ND, you lost to them, and we beat them 41-8.

You aren't wrong in being confident. But if Miami "isn't good" then what does that say about LSU. Not to mention you lost to Troy last year.

LSU is talented. Miami is talented. No reason to conclude either of these teams are bad.

This is one of the best LSU defenses in years. Probally the one of the best in the country this year. Iron sharpens iron. Our offense will have bumps here and there, like any first game. But Joe is the real deal. He has a fire to win and that is why a lot of LSU fans are excited. First time since Matt Flynn we have a QB that dose'nt stare down the receiver and actually goes to different options.

That’s fair but it’ll be closer than your final score. More like 27-23.

Miami is not scoring 24 on LSU without a lot of turnover help.

@Scoob, fair points I can definitely agree with most of them.

I'd be a little concerned as an LSU fan with the OC situation. Ensminger hasn't been in this role for 20 years. I'd consider him a downgrade to Matt Canada, granted the offense had its fair share of struggles last year.

How do you see him approaching this game? I was reading about the expectation of more of a spread concept with 4 and 5 WR sets.

So you didn't include the LSU D vs Miami O in your "in depth analysis" at all?

Why do you suppose that is?

You're in for a surprise if you think Ensminger has the "Miles approach."

Here, a recent 247 article summarizing the change.
