Is It Okay to Dislike ‘Avengers: Infinity War’?

Is Avengers: Infinity War the greatest film ever made? Maybe that’s a bit of an overstatement. But Infinity War is certainly one of the greatest superhero films ever made, right? An astounding cinematic accomplishment on par with or surpassing Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight even.
Is this hyperbole? Maybe. But there’s a wide swath of fans who genuinely feel this way about Marvel Studios’ star-filled epic, which—along with the untitled Avengers 4—serves as the culmination event of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far.
And this is kind of one of my larger issues with the movie—it doesn’t feel like a movie. Shot back-to-back with Avengers 4, we know Infinity War is only half the story. But it doesn’t even really feel like half a movie. It feels like a series of scenes in which characters discuss exposition, move from place to place, and then CG versions of those characters punch each other. There are a few moments of solemnity here and there, as when Thor (Chris Hemsworth) laments the loss of his people when he meets up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, but because this movie has to move so quickly (by its own nature), those moments rarely land. They just kind of… happen. Then you move on.
And then there’s Thanos, the film’s protagonist. He gets the most in-depth storyline of any of the characters, and there are multiple attempts to flesh him out with an emotional backstory and a tear-filled twist. But Thanos is no Caesar from the Apes franchise. The performance-capture technology is great, but there’s still a gulf of disconnect there, and I cannot bring myself to get invested in what’s going on in this guy’s head. The grand motivation for the MCU’s greatest threat is that he’s… very passionate about overpopulation? I mean, fine, most Marvel villains are lacking, but the ones that stick are rooted in pathos—Loki, Killmonger, even Bucky. There’s an attempt to root Thanos in pathos with regards to his relationship with Gamora (Zoe Saldana), but it doesn’t track. Thanos can say he loves Gamora, and can cry when faced with throwing her off a cliff, but it’s tough to buy it when you’ve seen him do such horrible things over the course of 19 films.

Frick this hipster article, that movie is awesome.
It was a culmination of 10 years, 18 movies, dozens of heroes, and it couldn't have been done better.
Thanos is a great movie villain.

I'd love to see a list of the horrible things he did in 19 films.

i re-watched this movie last week and it was fricking amazing (again)
yes. 100%

Yeah this guy is trying hard to go against the grain. Of course it’s ok if he didn’t like the movie but his reasons are weak.

Of course you can not like it, tastes are completely subjective, but this article reeks of hipster "it's too mainstream" projecting. It's a fricking phenomenal movie.

This guy is trying to be different just for the sake of being different.
Was Infinity War perfect? No
But it did exactly what it set out to do with only a few minor flaws.
The way they almost seemlessly brought all the characters from the MCU together was brilliant. And it was a pretty good story to boot.
And just because it is the first half of that story is no reason to criticize it.

That really is the only reason you could dislike Infinity War.
Sports related, it's why you've never seen a unanimous selection into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Infinity War was a good comic book movie. I wouldn't necessarily call it a great one, however. It's an impressive achievement when you look at it as being part of a greater whole. But when you look at it all by itself it doesn't stand on its own. It absolutely NEEDS to stand on the shoulders of the films in the franchise that came before it to hold up.

That's a fair point. One of my carpoolers, 39 yrs old, had never seen an MCU film. He watched IW and black panther with his kids this weekend. He thought BP was fine, but his exact quote about IW..."that's the dumbest shite I've ever seen, I can't believe you guys are into that crap."

It's called depth; something this writer seems to know nothing about. Throughout the entire movie, you get the feeling that Thanos is very driven, yet regrets what he has to do. But it's not surprising the writer didn't get this. Everyone seems to have at black or white mentality when it comes to everything.

It's not enough for me to say I liked the film. I have to regard it as a flawless achievement, too?
Posted on 8/21/18 at 10:52 am to RLDSC FAN
Yes, it’s okay to dislike it. But these are all absolutey terrible reasons. Garbage article.

That "flaw" is retarded. Sorry.

This. He’s grasping at straws. There were several emotional moments that landed. Star Lord and Gamora, Gamora and Thanos, Thor and Rocket. Hell the movie made me care about Vision and Scarlet Witch, two characters who were on the back burner for me.

Of course it needs the other movies. But that isn’t a fair point for criticism.
Lots of great movies within a franchise rely on previous films.
Would Return if the King been as good without the first two LOtR movies?
Would Empire Strikes Back been as good if we didn’t have the backstory from Star Wars?
Would Goddather 2 be so iconic without Michaels rise to power in The Goddather.
The entire MCU was building to Infinity War, it was never intended to stand alone. The fact that we’re abke to pull all of it off makes it even more impressive.

This guy is dumb. Not liking the movie is fine. But it is arguably a very good movie overall and easily a great comic book movie.
I don't even want to break this down, but at least one point....

No. He views the suffering of many people as the result of overpopulation. He wants to cure the suffering, and the inequality, no the overpopulation.

That "flaw" is retarded.
To someone who absolutely loves these movies, who has watched every single one of them in the theater, and who has many hours of repeated viewings at home on their 65" TV screen, it probably is retarded.
To the casual comic book movie fan and fan of movies overall, it just might be a legitimate criticism.
