CRS says the new tariffs could reap the U.S. some $7.5 billion — $5.8 billion on steel and $1.7 billion on aluminum – based on last year's import levels.

US manufacturers aren't benefiting from this - the federal government is.

I'm going to go out on a limb and bet this year's import levels will be lower.

Who’s paying that tax?

They should use that to enhance infrastructure that industry uses.

Better to tax our citizens to add jobs then give away money to lazy people that don’t want to work .

how is it a "caricature" to respond in the way Roger did?
OP is touting a benefit, to the government, of the tariffs that are in effect until further notice. Roger responds with a perfectly fair and accurate point. where is the caricature, and where is the attack?

This is an answer steeped in ignorance.

That is still less than 0.2% of tax revenues. Tariffs are not big tax revenue generators. The main purpose is to protect industries that are important to our national economy and security. We have to maintain a robust steel and aluminum industry to maintain the largest and best military in the world. Cheap Chinese steel is at threat to our military. It is a very small price to pay to make sure our dollar remains the reserve currency of the world.

But our taxes are more righteous than theirs!
Taxes generally do not spur economic growth but I guess it will be different this time?

Of course they don't. However if taxes are necessary I would choose regressive taxes every time over progressive taxes.
