There must be some sort of catch here. OP can’t seriously be debating San Diego to Tacoma, WA?

Yeah, the Hilltop crowd has moved over to the eastside and parts of Lakewood. The areas they are now are pretty avoidable. I've probably been to the eastside 3 times in 10 years.

Tacoma all day. Had a buddy live in SD, was there for 3 years, home prices are astronomical..at 170k you ain't buying shite within 2 hours that you would want to live in..also, if southern guy, I hear it is almost to chilly most of the time, you don't get really hot days.... downfall of Tacoma is rain, rain, rain and more rain

Can't find a decent house under $750k. And property tax is about $12k a year for a house like that.

Is Tacoma that much better?

EDIT - Turns out Tacoma is much, much better and isn't impacted by the ridiculous Seattle home prices. It's also on track to having one of the highest home-price outlook in the future. You might be better off with Tacoma and making money in the long run.

It mostly did then as well.

Only thing good I remember was the 4k I won playing pai gow at Jimmy G's and my kids were born at St. Clare hospital.

Sort of. More mist and overcast skies than actual rain. But winters out here are definitely not for everyone.

72 and sunny every goddamn day with beaches and great food sounds like heaven to me. Please tell your potential employer that you have a friend interested in relocation, and email that employer's info to bryndenblackfish@yahoo.com

I've applied to a few dozen jobs out there and never heard back from any of them. There's no jobs in Louisiana, so if I have to go out of state, I might as well go some place nice.

You get paid 25% more to live in the better city ... how is this even a question? At that salary you can easily afford CoL. I have colleagues that make far less and comfortably own homes there.

Probably San Diego with 170k. If you would prefer to live in Tacoma, maybe you could leverage the company offering you 135k.

What do you do OP?

The COL is not the same. Tacoma is about 35% cheaper.

Understand cost of living? San Diego proper or close 1mm+ for a family of 4 that you can buy in nearly every other part of US

He's got a point

A salary of $24,000 in Tacoma, Washington should increase to $35,288 in San Diego, California

Cost of Living Indexes Tacoma San Diego
Overall 113 166
Food 101 107
Housing 122 292
Median Home Cost $285,700 $622,700
Utilities 103 101
Transportation 107 112
Health 110 111
Miscellaneous 116 103
Cost of Living Comparison

His salary in Tacoma actually would go farther than the one in San Diego. If Tacoma has more activities that he likes, then Tacoma is the rational choice.

Oh wow, did not see this post when I posted. I figured Tacoma would be pricey due to proximity to Seattle. Pacific NW might be preferable to southern california depending on one's disposition and interests.

Not to mention no state income tax in WA vs the highest in the country.

Depends, are you married and do you have kids?

If the answer is neither this isn't even a decision. Also, if not married and no kids how much it would cost to be a house shouldn't even be in the top 10 things I would consider.

I'd probably go Tacoma. I enjoy the seasonal weather and scenery in the PNW

Yep.

If you don't mind no seasonal variety and love beaches SD is probably a place for you. I think it's a great spot to visit but wouldn't live there. PNW is far more to my liking.
