Has this idea been discussed about school safety?

I was on a University's campus recently and I noticed each classroom had a card reader by each classroom door.
Are high school students issued these RFID cards that are used at door entrances?
Certainly each reader could be programmed individually and can be setup to only allow entrance to where the student needs to be.
Further, if actively monitored, a student's badge can be disabled if he didn't arrive at school at the proper time. Therefore, he could only come in a certain entrance after school has begun.
Certainly won't totally eliminate a mass shooting attempt, but perhaps it could mitigate it and provide kids more safe places to hide inside classrooms that stay locked.

That would prevent shooters who are not students, but aren’t most school shooters students that go there?

Sounds like a step in the right direction

It’s easy to tailgate to get past that type of security.
I was a penetration tester for a while, ie someone who gets paid to break into not only software systems but also physical security like this,

This. I think the card readers would be a solution for something that’s not a problem. It’s not random folk that bust in a shoot everyone, it’s going to be student that has a card thus has access.

There are many many access control and door hardware solutions already in the marketplace. It only takes money and its something most schools just dont have.

Ok, but the fellow student shooter gets in the main door with his badge, but he can only get to whatever classrooms he is assigned to. Not all of them.
Further, if somehow they can figure out who is shooting, they can quickly deactivate his card at the office. Definitely not fool proof, but maybe it could help.

If the card reader allows students to access every area that requires one, throughout the school, then that doesn't prevent a student, who is shooting people, from getting into rooms.
For someone who doesn't have access to a card, all it takes is setting off the fire alarm or doing something to get people out of the classrooms.
It couldn't hurt and could possibly create a problem for someone who is planning on shooting up a school, but something like this, they would adapt to (find away around it).

Most card readers are so people can't get into rooms. The option to get out remains the same. Setting off an alarm doesn't always release the no entry protection.
The bigger risk is that the internal eye doesn't see you in the event of a real emergency, been there for this problem.
Also, you are neglecting the ability of there to be an override in the event of an active shooter.

If every door in the building has a reader and you can only access certain ones you can essentially trap people trying to flee. He goes into the hallway and starts blasting, those students can now only escape via certain doors. They’re trapped and now dead.

From a practical standpoint, can you imagine the shite show EACH AND EVERY DAY when fifteen percent of the irresponsible little shits forget their key cards?
NO WAY the administration and teachers aren't going to just prop all the doors open within two weeks.
The hallmark of a good security process is that either:
A. It is so simple that people don't mind doing it.
or
B. Your personnel are so disciplined that they will adhere to the process without fail.
You rarely if ever get B, certainly not in a school, and this idea isn't A by any stretch.

I guess I should add my opinion that the real solution is there is no solution. If you have a deranged kid hellbent on killing, he will. We can spend lots of money trying to turn our schools into fortresses but it won’t stop it, there’s always ways. Hell, shoot em as they leave the building.
The real solution is getting these kids psychiatric help if they need it. That may stop *some*.

The last few years I was in high school we had to have picture badges. Out of more than 1500 students maybe 20 a day were without them. A temporary badge had to be obtained.

There are too many people peddling expensive tech solutions to gullible school administrators.

Good career, just tough to get your foot in the door.

Yeah but most didn't need them, I know I never needed mine unless I was buying lunch.
Most schools lock the gates/doors during school hours and only have one entry way in. This is a safety measure many have taken lately

Won’t be locked in any room or common are. All doors will have free egress. The most schools don’t have the budget comment is correct $2500 to $4000 per door is the going rate plus control panel, server, software licenses etc. Also for a school they will need a full time person to administer the system and manage cards. Arm the teachers. This is the answer.
