Something has to be tried. You don't just leave your house unlocked with the thought that a thief will just bust the door down and get in. Little steps can always help mitigate the situation. Again, I never said the door badges will prevent a shooting, just lessen it. Think about if a deranged kid "only" shoots 2 or 3, instead of 15? I'm sure the family of the 10 or so that weren't shot are sure happy some preventative measures were made.

But that’s not reality though. You can spend as much as you want but it won’t solve the problem. A ton of kids leaving school when the bell rings is an easy target with lots of casualties. If a kid is dead set on doing this he will. You can’t stop that. And honestly we don’t want our schools to feel like fortresses or prisons. I’d imagine that would exacerbate mental derangement. Our schools should feel inviting and like institutions of learning. All of this defensive spending doesn’t solve the problem but costs a ton of money and instills the feeling that there’s always something to fear.

People don't want to here this. Groups like the NRA feed them a bunch of bullshite and any type of gun control means the government wants to take everyone's gun away.

I am all for people having a gun for protection and hunting, but I still don't understand why AR-15s are as easy to get, as they are.

People will post the same arguments. "It's our 2nd Amendment right to be able to buy all the guns we want. I'd rather see several mass shootings a year, involving an AR-15 than to give up my constitutional right"

I respect the 2nd Amendment, as I said before, I am all for people having guns for protection or hunting, but the 2nd amendment is a little more specific than "everyone has a right to own as many guns as they want"

No wants to see mass shootings happen. Don’t play that card. It’s not a trade off. There are not several mass shootings every year. They are not common. The media crams them down your throat for views. Tragedy sells papers. It has alwas been that way. Yes, if you have guns there will be gun related incidents, but that logic applies to everything. Everything you do carries a risk. As for AR-15s specifically, they are not responsible for the majority of firearm homicides. Most gun related incidents involve handguns. The fear of ARs is extremely over played.

The bigger risk is that the internal eye doesn't see you in the event of a real emergency, been there for this problem.

Already answered but all doors are already free egress regardless of the state of the lock on the secure side of the door. Only doors without free egress require special locking arrangements and the fire marshal will not approve that in education occupancies.

that seems reasonable

The Don is spot on. Sometimes the cost is higher.

Very limited education budgets just dont allow for solutions you would see in a military, goverment or healthcare environment.

Bullet resistant doors are very expensive also but there are now solutions in the market for “attack resistant” doors that allow a bullet to go through the door and hardware but wont allow the penetration of the opening(door and glass) with various tools in 4 mins. Most likely the shooter will be engaged in 4 mins or they give up and leave. Watch this youtube vid for a demo of the differeence in film applied to glass vs attack resistant glass Youtube link

Again the solutions are in the market but no one is going to get them unless they are willing to spend the money or its a new school and its designed in the project.

You're expecting 14-17 year olds to keep track of those things.

This. The access cards are probably great for tracking entry/exits or deterring non violent students from sneaking out of school. The system is useful- but will not prevent someone fixated on murder from executing their plans.

An angry psychopath could get a job in the cafeteria and poison hundreds of people within an hour. They could put fast-acting sedatives in the bus driver’s iced tea, plan a sniper attack outdoors, etc. Banning certain guns and turning schools into Fort Knox won’t prevent a psycho from going out in blaze of pew-pew or stab-stab outdoors.

What about firemedics and LEO confronting restricted access to emergencies in the school - isn’t that a problem? So much can go wrong even with a plan in place.

Half of our employees can’t keep up with their badges on a regular basis. You expect high school students to????

Perhaps fixing the mental health problem in America is part of a solution?
