Dude, I don't know how old you are, but when I was young enough to still be single (a very long time ago) I wouldn't have given this a second thought. All this talk about exit plans and what to bring what not to bring, all BS when you're young and single. Unless you have a really serious reason you can't go, GET GONE! Go make some memories. Good luck and have a good life!

Put it this way, if you don't go now while you don't have too many encumbrances, you will most likely look back on it later in life and regret it.

Go for it. My brother lives in the Caribbean and loves it. I constantly wish I would have done this when I got out of school but as randy Travis once said, “they say hindsight’s 20/20”.
Flights aren’t that expensive if you just keep up with them and avoid peak times. Visit Kauai and Maui. Enjoy.
I wouldn’t be worried about anything except for the Germans

Do it. Don’t let this be the thing you look back on later in life and regret not doing.
Young and single? Perfect stage of life to make such a move imo.![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconcheers.gif)

You are stuck on the island and very expensive to travel back to the states to see friends, etc. They wont come see you because its too expensive.
I had the opposite problem. I had friends and family visit dozens of times because being able to stay at my house made the trip more doable.

No
1) All the baws saying that you should do it, never even considered doing it
2) The guys that are military based aren't good examples. They get perks that youll never have available to you
3) I did it for 5 years. After 3, you are pulling your hair out. That's 150 weekends of doing the exact same thing: swim, surf, hike, tour. It gets REALLY boring. And youre never going to have the money or time off from work to return to the mainland
And the locals really do dislike haoles. And the traffic is brutal. And everything is expensive as shite. A McDs Happy meal that costs you $4.75 here, is $6.99 in Honolulu
And you have to consider the Rip Van Winkle factor. While youre enjoying the years in Hawaii time doesn't slow down over here. When you return you start at the bottom of the totem pole in dating, job advancement, circle of friends, etc

Im not going to say no but RobbBob makes legitimate points. I would say the Haole thing is earned by some people because they tend to compare everything to the mainland and the locals don't like that. I've been here a little over a year and have mixed feelings about it.

I tend to agree with you. I lived there four years and never had a "haole experience". Then again I lived on North Shore and avoided Honolulu at all costs. And I rarely went further west on the south side of the island than Kapolei so that might have had something to do with it.

Just do it. Don’t bring your truck unless you have to. Plenty of people to buy cars from moving back to the mainland, mainly military. People who talk about island fever or boredom may be true for them but not for you. Never had an issue with racism. I lived in Kauai for 7 years and now Oahu for 7 and I don’t have any of those issues. Traffic can be a real pain but depending on where you live and work it may not be. Everything is workable so the question is do you want to pass this up while young and single?
ETA: LSU games are always on TV,sometimes you’ll have to wake up for 6a but the cool thing is you still have a whole day after a couple games. Saints games can get tricky sometimes but after last year they’ll have plenty games on TV and you can always go to a place that has games or get Direct TV.

Just remember as an outsider you have a much higher chance of being murdered.

I loved watching football in HI. The early games were usually half over by the time I woke up, but the SEC, and most of the other teams anyone cares about were done by early evening so I could still do other things.

So for those who have lived or live on the island, how bad is the traffic around Pearl Harbor? That is where I will be working.

I've been told my personality makes me a solid 3 though.

It depends on where you’re coming from and what time of day. But in the area it’s not necessarily bad.
Posted on 7/20/18 at 6:38 am to RB10
Traffic should be the least of your concerns, sure it will be there and it's not great but it's not nearly as bad as other big cities either. Honolulu and Oahu aren't big enough to have that terrible of traffic.
Plus you are single so it's easy to deal with traffic; go to the gym before or after work, bring breakfast to go in the car to best traffic, etc.
