Is the drive worth the hype? I have driven around Kaui and Oahu. Is this drive that much different that it is a must do?

If you have done the other two islands I would say the Road to Hana could probably be skipped.
We did the Road to Hana when we stayed on Maui and it was fun, ate at one of those hole in the wall places Hawaii is famous for and ended at a winery on Maui.

Yes. One of my better memories of 3 trips to Maui. And the drive on Hwy. 30 around the west side of the island is impressive (and a little white knuckle), too.

I would say driving the road to Hana and stopping at points of interest is a "must do". You can pick up a CD disc that explains the points of interest and where to stop and wander into the rain forests.......It was the highlight of our trip for sure. You will pass George Harrison's former Hawaiian home and see fantastic views.

The CD is a good tip. Im going to look in to it.

it is pretty fun, just make sure you go early. Save yourself a lot of hassle and drive all the way around the island. There are some great views and its not congested switchbacks.

Yes do it.
However, those telling you to do the back off, most rental car contracts forbid it, or tell you that you are basically on your own if anything happens.
We turned around at the sacred pools and came back the same way.
Cool drive, lots of stuff to see.
There are apps to download for it.

Part of the backside used to not be paved which is why I think the rental car companies didn't like it. I am pretty sure in the last couple of years that road is now fully paved.

Download the app that uses gps to tell you stops. In my honest opinion, it’s not worth it. It is a long grueling drive and you are exhausted afterwards

not fully paved as of 2 years ago. if it is that would save time. but, do it. so what if u get tired. yes, there is a downloadable app. we got cd from gas station in paua where road starts by mammas fishhouse

It was fun. I'd recommend it.
Wasn't paved or allowed last year either. It's not that big of a deal to just return via the same route.
I liked it better on the drive back. You know more of what to expect and what to look for. And we made our relaxing stops on the return trip because we didn't have to worry about whether we would get there or not.

Took the spouse and 4 kids. They always list Hana as a thing they would do again. Along the drive are waterfalls with swimming holes, black sand beaches, red sand beaches, the 7 sacred pools, endless photo ops
Leave VERY early!!

What's the preferred rental car type for Maui and the Road to Hana? A convertible Mustang or a Jeep Wrangler?

do it. Find a cd or book that has all the hidden stops. Some really cool hikes to hidden pools and waterfalls.

Jeep. Sits higher = better views on Road to Hana. Better for lugging stuff to the beach. We just flipped the roof back each time we went out. Also super windy in spots on Maui.

Better pack the Dramamine from what I hear. Other than that it sounds like a good time.

If you're driving, you don't need it.
However on the way back i was a passenger and there were a few times that I was starting to feel the motion sickness a bit. Its hours of twists and turns.

We did the jeep. There are a few 'off road' places that will be better in a jeep
