Trail running is the best. I averaged over 11 minute pace today but it was still a good hard run and enjoyed it more than a solid 8 minute 10k earlier this week.
I would bet there’s a group in your area. You just got to find them. And nothing I see from here makes me think you’re an a-hole. Competitive, maybe but not an a-hole.
I’ll extol the virtues of group running all day. There’s a reason the Kenyans kick our rears.
Something I can’t show in pictures is that on the climb to the waterfall I slid down a cliff side and developed a nice goosegg on my arse. Slid mostly controlled down about 10 feet.

Yeah I was just joking about being an ahole but you are probably right, there's got to be a group. How about RS? Looks like he's making some breakthroughs. Really happy for him.
Takes a little time to learn that you have to get through a lot of garbage runs to put together the really great ones. Something we can all be reminded of now and again.

Yeah I was super pumped for his time today. Got to feel great to go sub 8! Always cool seeing guys get their goal.
I might have my first competitive 5k ever in 2 weeks. Sounds laughable considering how much I run but I haven’t ever run one full speed. I usually run with my 9 year old and he does well with 24-25 minute races but never a full speed.

I'm enjoying the process of getting my miles in , letting bad runs go, and running as hard as I can when needed.
I'm sort of excited about having 6 weeks to go before my training officially starts.

Gonna got the trails after I finish this marathon on Labor Day. Gunning for a 50k in November. Will have 9k feet of elevation gain. It will be fun to just get out there and try to finish rather than being so worried about splits.

I have a odd/beginner type question-->
Is there any benefit to adding sprints to the end of a scheduled run?
For a specific example, I do an out & back on a paved nature trail for my 7 mile runs. Often , I'll find myself running long on the way out and having .75 - 1 left over on the way back.
So I could -->
A. Turn it into a 7.75 mile run
B. Walk
C. Add on hard sprints as far as I can push it , walk , and repeat till I get back to my car

I’d be careful of over exertion on something like that. If your body feels like it can handle it then maybe try a few and see how that goes. But I’d save sprint day/speed training as a separate thing. Just my opinion. I’m more conservative.
Did my 7 miler this morning as part of the NYC marathon qualification. 55:03. Pretty pleased. It was humid. Everyone was dripping at the end. Went out hot and had to slow down to make it at the end. Pleased overall.

I'll find a conservative mix, or, do a better job of watching my gps haha.
I just began to worry because these is no dedicated speed work in the Hal Higdon marathon plan for my level.
Great job with the 55:03.

You can always mix and match with his plans. I often do. I try to get speed work in once every other week at least. Instead of doing a mid week 6 miler or something similar, look at a different level and find some speed work that works for you. I do quarter mile intervals (400m) for about 3-4 miles and build up from there.

Maybe do some strides RS? I do 20 sec on/off on some of my long runs, per Daniels Plan. I find them fun. They are more to work on your form when going fast, could be a way to make that .75 useful on some days.
Back from week long beach vacation today. Got all of my runs in but damn all of the food, lack of good sleep, ALCOHOL caught up with me on my long run/workout this am.
Had this on the plan.
1 WU
2 MP @ 6:55-7:10 (I definitely wouldn’t call this my current MP, HMGP however)
1 Easy @ 7:58-8:47
4 MP (all was OK here until I was a couple miles in, then the wheels fell completely off. HR through the roof, pretty much bonked, last couple miles involved a couple of brief stops, hands on hips, etc.)
1 CD (only did .5)
I only ate a couple of bad meals the whole trip but it’s all the shite in between that caught up with me. That said, I felt guilty every beer/drink I had as I was worried how it would affect my next run. Completely ate up with it, not sure if this is good or bad, haha.
Was surprised to step on the scale and see I only gained 4 pounds. Guess I’ll blow it out with a pizza today and back on the train tomorrow! Choo choo m’fers!!

I'm embarrassed to say, mentally, I was trying to talk myself into walking and resting during yesterday's 5K...it was much faster and harder than my norm and when it got tough, my legs felt it, and I saw others slowing, I came close to giving in.
I checked my watch, saw I was going to get a PR, and kicked those thoughts away in about 10 seconds. The harder training is finally helping with the mental softness.
The idea of strides seem like a good fit...helps with form, only about 20 seconds, have some fun, and kill time & distance at the end.

Everyone does this. I do it almost every race I'm in. I did it on my tempo run on Saturday. I'd wager that most everyone does, even professionals. People that say they don't either are lying or not running hard enough. No shame to be had RS.

Stopped and asked someone if there was a race and come to find out there was a damn 5K pretty much on the route I was running. Logistically, I didn’t have time to run back to the condo, get my wallet, change shoes (of course) and be back for the start. But damn, can’t believe I missed that. This is something I have never thought of. I am going to be in Houston next month and just checked and there are two 5K within a mile of my hotel. Now I need to convince my wife it’s a good idea

Houston running right now is a terrible idea, but I try and do this when I travel as well.
I've been focusing on my marathon plan (Week 6) and increasing my weekly mileage. Still trying to figure out my nutrition more than anything. Lately I can't tell if I'm struggling on long runs because I'm not loading enough toward the back end of the week or if it's so damn hot outside.

Time to get back on it. Ran 10 Saturday with some buddies at 9:08/mile avg pace. Need to lay out a schedule and find some goals to chase
