We all knew he had the athletic ability. I think he finally learned how to play his position and now is starting to utilize the freak athletic body. Good for him and

Well deserved. Good for him.

quote:I used to say this shite all the time, that they would just line'em up and play them. That they didn't know how to do any kind of pass rush moves whatsoever, even the most basic moves and that when they would get to the NFL that's when they would finally get correct coaching or in football terms "coached up". And this didn't happen with Hunter only, it happened with Mingo too who relied on pure speed to get to the QB. If he had been trained properly at LSU his NFL career would be a lot different, but this just didn't happen to Mingo and Hunter, it happened to a lot of other DL's as well. Haley was a joke, and Chavis was a joke as a DC that LSU's great talent put on the map like they did with Miles.
NFL coach was shocked that he didnt learn basic technique.

Those players made it in the NFL off their talent just like the LSU players because it sure in hell wasn't anything that Chavis did with them that made them great players.

so all the guys that made it to the NFL did it with no help from Chavis? across multiple years, multiple schools, with multiple guys (esp the LBs) speaking highly of him?
I get it, Chief wasn't perfect. but at least until he hit A&M he was one of the best DCs in the country for a long time.

I didn't think he was a good DC when he came from Tennessee, he was alright to me, but a lot of y'all seemed to think he was a really good DC. I thought he was overrated, and kids in college are young not really knowing much in terms coaching philosophy, so they will speak highly of you, but make no mistake about it he enjoyed most of the success in his career at LSU. LSU's tremendous talent would make anyone look good though, LA is a state that per capita has some of the finest football talent around. But, I forgot to say I'm happy for Hunter, I hope he has a great career.

Yup and Haley.
We were around dead last in total sacks for an SEC team the year before O showed up.. when O got here he immediately took us to like top 3.. and that was with one cupcake game cancelled.
I was so glad we Chief left and we got Aranda.

Say what y'all want but Chavis' defensive gameplanning was pretty amazing. I still remember the out-of-the-ordinary double-a-gap pressure looks he kept giving Oregon anytime they got to plus-down-and-distance situations early on. Never on 1st downs unless they were putting a drive together.
Then I realized every time they showed it, Darron Thomas audibled out by running a bit of a modified check-with-me by looking towards the sidelines. They had broken down enough film to know that when Chip's offense got double-a-gap pressure, the coaches wanted to slide protection calls from the sideline.
It wasn't meant to try and create pressure or even confusion. Chief was doing it to slow down their tempo. He was only doing it when they had a little something going and went to get into tempo.
It was an absolutely brilliant tactical move on his part. Oregon didn't really have an answer for it unless they would just make a predetermined shift and Chief and the LSU staff would see that and could adjust pressure and get the edge as soon as they did it.
Kelly is still considered one of the best in the game on the offensive side of the ball, and Chief rooked him. Hard.
While I agree he didn't do much from a technique standpoint, his kids played fast and confident and we maximized athleticism doing it. He did well with what he had, but over time, I think our offense cost him just as much as any lack of development that did (or didn't?) occur on his watch.
He gets a tad too much blame here all things considered IMO.

none listed are really comparable to hunter's skillset, people are not exactly slamming chavis' D, his style just wasn't a great fit to feature Hunter
