To make Louisiana great (can we say again?)

What could a politician with true balls of steel do to Louisiana to make it great and prosperous? What should be changed?

It all needs to be scrapped and redone. Unfixable

It needs to be annexed by Texas.

Hmmmmmmm. Not sure those are attainable for Louisiana, at least not by the world’s definitions.
I would want some focus on revitalizing small towns. Our small towns are going to shite.

The state is owned by the petroleum industry. As long as this is true it will remain as it is.

It's got a blend of odds and ends.
Socially conservative with bits of paternalistic socialism, thanks to Huey Long.

Entice industry to come here aomehow... our biggest problem as a state is we are too dependent upon the oil industry, we need another big industry that is stable

Doesn't the Texas Legislature meet every other year? There's a start. Several major reforms need to be made. We should be trying to model Texas every step of the way. Schools, businesses, and approach to government. Some will scream that it will dilute our "culture". Culture of what?...corruption, greed, and incompetence? Medicaid expansion has killed us. Oil prices have killed us. Education rankings kill us. Economic growth kills us.
We need to focus on our local economies, small town buy local approach and give an aggressive approach to helping small businesses. A rising tide will lift all boats as the local economy grows, so will money for local govt infrastructure and education.
It really wouldn't be that hard if our culture of corruption, small time thinking, and stupidity wasn't holding us back.

Nothing can be done to remedy the situation under the current constitution. There is no quick fix. There is no silver bullet. There is no low hanging fruit. The type of reform necessary to right this ship is massive, and I don't think anyone has the political will to do it. Given the average quality of our elected legislator, they probably lack the intelligence also.
We need to scrap the homestead exemption in conjunction with a massive reform the tax system. We need to do away with about 90% of the state boards and commissions. We need to scrap constitutional and statutory dedications. We need to decentralize state level power and return more to municipalities. We need new ethics laws for elected officials, civil service reform, higher ed consolidation, better business development and retention strategies, and a miracle from heaven.

we can start by not electing the same tired arse republicans and Democrats to our Legislature. We can loosen the grip of the oil industry on our state they are literally going to destroy this state . 80 % of the atchafalaya swamp is black water and we are green lighting another pipeline thru the swamp. Once the swamp is gone and useless maybe then we will open our eyes to what we have done to our great state.

We should push for a complete education overhaul, reevaluate all state employees jobs/pay, and figure out a way to bring in some data centers for several big companies. We should also increase sales taxes for the state and use the funds to directly invest back into infrastructure but I know you baws will hate investing in yourselves

Lotta wrong answers up this thread.
Yeah, TOPS is what's wrong Louisiana.
Before that we were a prosperous paradise of a state!
1. Structurally too much runs through Baton Rouge. We have to devolve some power to the locals. That said there are some things the locals do that are probably better done at the state level (sales tax collections for one).
Now I do have some hesitation. Local government tends to be, well, less competent. Maybe the additional powers (and mostly I mean the power to tax) is conditioned upon meeting certain conditions (clean audits, financial transparency, demonstration of competent financial staff and accounting systems, etc).
2. Some of our problems are societal and cultural. I am skeptical of how much rearranging government can actually address those issues.

The only thing that would honestly fix everything is if we fixed our sense of community and stopped acting like we are apart of exclusive groups of people. I think if we lived among the people we loved, we would have a much better community to live in.
