I hate to see how social media can make even the greats cave and apologize.

Weak. God I hate capitulation to media "outrage".
Posted on 6/20/18 at 10:32 am to Eric Stratton
Wait, no, he did it because he knows the rules and new he would be better off hitting a moving ball than to chip it back and forth across the green and making a bigger score. This must be false. frick Phil, frick Tiger, and frick the USGA.

I've read +100 tweets, from people that most likely dont even watch golf, tagging Phil's sponsors and threatening to boycott their products if they didn't pull his sponsorship. Absolutely ridiculous

I wish it was but the golf channel and PGA just reported the same thing.

How can anyone be offended by what he did?

Must be some of the posters from the Courtyard OT thread

are you three? ... the fact that golfers disagree with what he did or the usga's ruling on it is not a sign that they were "offended" ... that's what you resort to if someone disagrees with you about anything - "you're a snowflake!"?
toughen up buttercup and learn to how argue a point without resorting to 3rd grade language ...

The tone and languages used in the days after the putt by talking heads, people would’ve thought that Phil had raped their mothers, wives, and children on national TV.
Offended is a correct term for some in this situation. You can argue terminology all day, but in the end, people have a lot of sand in their collective vaginas about it.

Honestly, there is a good chance Phil truly is embarrassed now and wish he didnt do it......
It was bush league, and now that he is settled down he realizes it

Unreal how pissy everyone is about the move. Even the commentator/interviewer after the incident was railing him pretty hard. The whole time I was hoping Phil would come unglued on the dude but he held composure like a pro and gentleman he is.
I would have done the same thing in his position. He knew the rule, and new the penalty. If the penalty isn't enough, they should change the penalty.

Phil knew it was bush league the minute he did it which was clear based off what he reportedly said moments after. That story completely changed during interviews afterwards when he had time to think about what he would say and crawfish his way out of it. I just don't think he expected as much backlash at the time, thus the public apology.

So a long time popular professional golfer intentionally cheats on national tv in a major golf tournament and some of you don't think there is anything wrong with it? Golf is a game of honor and respect for the rules.
Before you respond to try to correct my use of the word, "cheater", you should know that the definition of a cheater, according to Websters, is "a person who acts dishonestly in order to gain an advantage." PM admitted on national TV that he engaged in his activity to gain an advantage. It was bush league and he should have been DQ'ed.
What if his push putt, which was hit while the ball was in motion, went in the hole? I realize he got a 2 shot penalty, but would that have counted?
Why wait until the ball is 3 feet past the hole, what if he tapped it right behind the hole?
What if his caddie intentionally stopped the ball with his foot just 6 inches from the hole?
What if he stopped a moving ball before it was about to go in the water or a hazard? A 2 stroke penalty might be better than a water ball penalty depending upon the drop zone.
There are so many things wrong with what he did. The only comforting thought, when the PGA and the R&A change or clarify the rule (which I believe they will do), the new rule will be called the Mickelson rule to remind us of the arse that he made of himself in the US Open.
Here is a link to an SI article that echos my sentiments.

I don’t understand what’s the big deal

And the rule is a 2 shot penalty, which he was assessed. He even reached out to he USGA to see about whether he should be disqualified, and they said no.
To me no different than an intentional foul or intentional pass interference. Yes, you are knowingly breaking the rules, but strategically, it makes sense in the situation. You take the penalty and move on. If the penalty is not right, change the rules.

As if your hypothetics and general whining weren't enough...
This is how I know that you don't know what you are talking about. The PGA (of America) has nothing to do with the US Open and the rules that govern it. The USGA will not change or "clarify" the rule because it is already in place and clarified. There is a penalty defined for the action which he was aware of and willing to take for carrying out said action. Chances are it cost him a shot or two in the long run and who knows, he could've holed the next shot and in that hypothetical it cost him 4.
Golf's experts talk about the rules being there to help you every time someone drops away from a sprinkler or a cart path or uses some obscure rule for relief or claims they're going to hit a 50 yd cut and the tv tower is in the way. You don't get to pick and choose when you can use the rules to your advantage and when you cannot. Either the rules are there to be used and followed with penalties for breaches (which he incurred) or every bit of relief makes you a "cheater". Pick one.
