Dealer switching my new 50 hp Mercury to 50 hp Tohatsu

Recently I bought a new boat that been sitting at a dealer for some time. It is a 2016 Aluminum boat for spillway and Amite River Fishing that had 50 hp Mercury. Price was right and it was ready to go.
I noticed I had sugglishness on my last trip. I took the motor in to be looked at last week.
Well dealer callled me back and said they will change out my engine from 50 hp Mercury with a 50 hp Tohatsu to get me out the door fast no charge.
I pay a small fee for motor registration and that is it.
They would not comment on what happened to the 50 hp Mercury.
I know from researching online they are decent engines.
My question is who Services these Tohatsu’s and has parts for them in the Baton Rouge area?

great motors
it will outlast you and your boat
you won’t need service just change the oil and the zincs

Is that in the size range that Honda makes for them

damn, you got a steal on that. My dad and brother both have tohatsu 40s (which are the 50s with a restrictor plate) and they love them. They haven't had any issues. My dad swore his was rattling so he brought it to the dealer and turned out it was his 34 year old hull making the noise. that's the closest thing to a problem they have had.

I have a good friend that works at a boat shop. He just told me that tohatsu owns mercury now, just the smaller class I believe. Then he sent me a pic of a brand new 150 tohatsu with Honda electronics on it so I’m not sure what’s going on.

Not sure about that. Nissan and Tohatsu are the same motors. I had a 50 tiller Tohatsu. Best motor I have ever ran.

You got a upgrade. Enjoy.

Tohatsu makes Mercury 40 hp and below. Mercury japan makes up to 75. Above that the Mercury is made in Wisconsin I believe

I am currently running a Yamaha 25 two stroke on my 16x48 flat boat. It does not have tilt/trim on it. Thinking about buying a 40 tiller Tohatsu. Any problems with hitting stumps, etc? Any damage problems? I use the boat for fishing and duck hunting.

These motors are worth their weight in gold.

Yup, keeping quiet not complaining.
Got small paperwork fee included some motor registration fee, and have to pay $50 difference on the stainless prop.
Not going to complain.
Paid $13,200 after 6 months of asking about the boat. 2016 new never registered 1650 aluminum boat had 50 hp Mercury. Has light factory spray liner, factory built Alum trailer, 12v 55lb minn Kota troll motor.
Great on gas, simple, decent room for 2 people to fish, real dry storage and livewell. Two people the Mercury after break in got up to 38 mph without pushing it hard. Avg cruise speed around 34 with 2 people. Not fast for the spillway gets you there.
Same trip this boat avg 3 gallons of gas. Nephews two stroke carb 1990 era 75 hp Mercury in his 16ft 48” fisher aluminum boat burns 6 gallons similar trip in the spillway.
Keeping this one in BR to fish the Atchafalaya Basin and Amite River area.

That Yami 25 is also a brute. Unless I just wanted to go faster, that’s not an upgrade.

Never seen a better deal.

It has been a great engine. Pushes my flat with two people about 26mph. Just considering more speed.

New 2018 around $15,995 similar boat from same mfg.
It took me 6 months.
Dealer showed me it last year wanted $14,500.
Then Jan went to $14,000
Then April went to $13,500
Then I finally talked to owner and said could he meet me 1/2 way on the seats as they looked weathered.
He said $13,200 with 5 yr Mercury warranty that was it.
I cut him a deposit of $500 to hold it and came back with money the next day.

Like I said, that Tohatsu motor is a legit motor. Every bit as good as the Yami in that HP if all you are wanting it for is a speed increase. Plus, the Tohatsu guts are great for taking it in the salt too.

The dealer you got it from doesn't service them or are they not located in the Baton Rouge area?
Maybe check the Tohatsu website's dealer locator feature to find one in the area based on zipcode.

The dealer I bought it from is not local.
I plan to keep this boat in the BR area.
I could not pass up the price.
If I have to use the selling dealer I will.
Just thought there might be one local people know about.
