What would be a good double barrel shotgun to give as a gift?

Friend of mine watched my horses when I was out of town and had a problem come up that he solved and he went way beyond the call of duty.

His birthday is coming up and I'd like to get him a gift, and since he is a big bird hunter, I thought a nice double barrel shotgun would be a good gift. $1500 to $2500 would be my price range. Dad likes Greener shotguns, but it seems the nice ones are out of my price range.

Would 12 ga. be the best gauge?

You trying to shoot down those planes spraying chemtrails?

You're gonna need something with a little more arse. May I suggest the infamous German 88?

A field grade Beretta 20ga O/U would get the job done.

CSMC 20 gauge Revelation Over/Under Shotgun

No tax owed, buy straight from the company, get 28" or 30"barrels, upgrade the wood if he did a really good job...

I assume side by side (only because Dad's collection is mostly side by side - I don't really know).

What would be the advantage of an over and under?

If you can find one, a Rugsd red label is a great shot gun. My granddad gave me his and I love it. 12ga

Is the 12 gauge too big? Everyone is saying get 20 gauge.

He "did a really good job." I had a horse that was badly injured and he got it to the right vet, which saved it from having to be euthanized. He's a very sweet guy.

Not many new Sxs shotguns produced that are quality for under $3k, The O/U can use more machined parts, less hand fitting and therefore better quality at the mid low end price points

The Red Label 28 gauge is rated higher than the other gauges but there are much better guns out there. The Red Label isn't even in production...

Could you ask one of his hunting buddies what gauge shotgun he uses? Getting the right gauge is pretty important.
