Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Explorer earn poor rating in latest IIHS crash test
LINK
Two of the top-selling midsize and large SUV/crossovers -- the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2018 Ford Explorer -- rated poor in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's latest passenger-side small overlap front crash tests, while the 2019 Kia Sorento, 2018 Volkswagen Atlas and 2018 GMC Acadia received good ratings
quote:
The Explorer is rated poor because the structure collapsed during the test. The Explorer's passenger-side small overlap crash test indicated right hip and left lower leg injuries could occur in a crash. The Grand Cherokee's passenger-side small overlap crash test indicated right leg injuries and a possible head injury could occur in a crash.
The Explorer has also received poor structural performance and an overall marginal rating for driver-side small overlap protection in the driver-side test.
The Grand Cherokee is a very popular SUV, and the Explorer is a popular van/crossover for families.
quote:
"We were seeing in some cases, automakers weren't making changes in the passenger side that would result in the same protections for right front passengers as they had for the driver's side," Zuby said. "When we launch a new test like we did in 2012, it's not surprising for us to see automakers change designs only on the driver's side."

Alright, boys, call off the search. I've found the missing GM fanboy.

The Sorento is the only vehicle tested to earn the institute's Top Safety Pick+ award. The vehicle was modified for the 2019 model year to improve protection in a passenger-side small overlap crash.
KIA doing work. A lot of people on this site bad-mouth KIA mericlessly, but KIA makes a pretty nice vehicle.
I'll be getting rid of my Jeep in a year or so, and KIA's way up on the list of possible replacements.

The Explorers have widely documented Carbon Monoxide issues as well.
I think the Grand Cherokee was the one that had a gearshift design issue a few years back. Drivers would think they were in park but were actually in neutral.

I recently checked out the Atlas. Could have been a nice car if the interior wasn't taken out of a 1998 Saturn.

They are crappy cars with poor engineering. The only reason to buy either would be if they cost 1/2 as much as their Asian competitor's comparable vehicles.

Good job for me. I just sold my Grand Cherokee and got a Ford Explorer last week.

Y'all remember the time when 1/2 of America seemingly owned an Explorer and then the SUV would flip after a tire failed?
Firestone and Ford played the blame game rather than address the problems all the while people were on the road dying.
It told me all I needed to know about Explorers back then. I know it is a totally redesigned chasis and class today but frick ever getting buying one.
And don't think GM's are any better with their keys falling out of the ignition BS...

Well Ford sucks. Everybody that didn’t take a short bus to school knows that.
Surprised to see the Kia outperform the Toyota, GMC, and VW.

I find that with a lot of VW products unfortunately.

They have certainly come a long way from their "Buy One Get One Free" days...

Yet another reason my household will always be Ford-free.

Technically the VW Atlas and GMC Acadia that outranked them are German and American, respectively.
Both built in the US.

Nevermind, I didn't read the whole article, but that was more about the shitty layout of the page.

I'm curious to see how the Subaru Ascent performs.

Very Spartan interiors/dashboards.
But, it's also one of the reasons why they are pretty inexpensive.

I knew I wasn’t imagining that! My wife never believed me but I swore I heard a radio ad long ago that Kias were 2-for-1.
