78 while no one's home then 74 degrees a half an hour before I get home to cool it off. Can't have the dogs overheating.

Always have cheaper electric bills if I turn it off during the day. House cools quickly when turned on late afternoon.

I really should get a thermostat I can program and override from my phone. But it’s just an old school one.

You people with a bill less than 150 must live in small apartments or large boxes.

All those 74s will be back to 76s when my wife returns to work in August.

Bump it down at lunch because I come home every day and like to be comfortable.

You leave it off all day and your house is at 85 degrees when you get home. How long is it going to take to bring it down to 70 or so? I would guess an hour or less. So you ran it for an hour, then probably ran it all night while sleeping. Your AC is on 12-13 hours a day.

You left for work at 0800. You left your AC on for 9 hours while you were away for work. You then left it on all night while sleeping. Your AC is literally on 20 or more hours a day.

And you started by calling people dumb?

This is the dumbest post in this thread

Just put a sprinkler on your roof with a timer to go off every 2 hours during the day and your house will be cool no matter what you do with your a/c.

If my house was 86 when I got home, it'd take 4 days to get it down to 70

75 away
72 home
70 sleep

This. I’m in an apartment so thr AC only has to run for like 5 minutes to get down to the next setting.

71 when home, 77 when gone

I read somewhere it is more efficient to keep the thermo set higher rather than turn off completely

I set it at 78.

When I go to bed, I put it down to 76.

I leave it at 80 when I'm away for an extended time.

Consumer reports did a study on this. Turn your unit off is the way to go.

We just keep ours set at 80 all the time. Don't turn off during the day cause we have dogs inside. Only time we turn thermostat off is if we are going out of town.

Even when it gets up to 110-115 outside...80 actually keeps our house pretty comfortable. Might drop it to 78
for a little bit if I'm working out at home. Ceiling fans going in bedroom and living room. Low humidity in general out here also makes a massive difference.

I do realize keeping your thermostat on 80 in an area with higher humidity would be very uncomfortable.

Well, yeah, the humidity is the factor there. The unit has to work harder to dry it out which in turn lowers the temp.
