I may be crazy, but I also think comfortable temperature for me can also vary by house. At my parents house (much newer than mine) if their thermostat is set to anything below 74, I'm freezing. At my house, I'm comfortable in the 72-74 range. At my friend's house, at 72 I'm sweating and miserable.

If I turn it off during the hottest days, it won't catch up until around 7pm.

I used to live in a very old, poorly insulated house with an ac unit that I know was too small for it. In the summer months, it would struggle to keep the home at 75 (it would get up to 78-79 while set at 75). It would run non-stop until about 9pm to get it back down to 75, then until about 10 to get it down to 72.

It was misery.

We built a new house and the downstairs unit has 3 zones.

Kitchen
Living Room/Spare bedroom
Master Suite

I keep my bedroom on 71 at night and the rest of the house at 75. Then my bedroom is 75 during the day.

Absolutely. Has to do with the layout of the house, insulation, sun exposure/windows, etc.

My townhouse was built in 2016, is very small (1,400 sqft), and has all of the modern insulation in the walls/attic and windows.

One HVAC can drop it from 75 to 68 in an hour

This is the way to go. If I ever have the opportunity to build, I'm going with zones, likely ductless mini-splits so that one condensing unit going down doesn't take out the whole house.

Multi-zone air conditioning is more expensive than single zone, but it's a huge quality of life improvement when everyone in the house can set their own room to their own temperature.

75 while gone. 72ish if home during the day. 69-70 to sleep.
this is how it’s done. If gone for a week or so I put it at 78. That’s as high as it goes.

You can not be serious.

my house is an old acadian with 28' ceiling in the living area, with brick floors and well ventilated. its also well shaded

in the winter its miserably cold inside, but in the summer i barely have to run the AC at all. most of the time on weekends we just open up all the doors and turn the AC off

One or both of your thermostats might be off

I’m reading some temperatures in here from people in the south that would force me to leave their house

I can’t go to my brother’s house for long because it’s like 75 in there

Received an email from Honeywell this afternoon stating I ran my AC 43% more in May of 2018 than in 2017. However it also noted that the temperatures throughout the month were 5• higher in average as well.

I can’t remember when we started running at 74 during the day instead of 78 though. I’m assuming it’s after due to the 43% increase in usage.

I pay less than 150 a month with 2600sqft and a pool pump that runs 8 hours a day.

If I leave the air off while I’m at work and at night when I don’t need the a/c, I can have a $60-$90 power bill. What am I doing wrong?

Moisture and air quality

Granted, the unit has to work twice as hard to get the temp down from say 86 down to 72.

No, it doesn't. Your a/c never runs twice as hard. It may run twice as long, but the only time it runs harder is each time it starts. Thus, running for longer and starting less times is technically more efficient.

Wouldn’t that equal out if it just ran constantly all day?

No, do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

There is your problem. When you leave for the day, leave it at 78. When I get back, I drop it to 74. When I sleep, It goes down to 70.

That's a combination of things. Your parents house has an oversized unit. The unit starts and stops a bunch of times, but never runs for long enough to dehumidify.

It may also be an issue of air velocity. If the unit is oversized, it's probably blowing the air faster, which increases the convection you're feeling.

At your friend's house, it is probably poorly insulated and/or sealed where you are sitting. The air near the thermostat is cooler than the air near walls.

Your unit is likely oversized and your hvac contractor is likely unfamiliar with manual J, much less manual D.
