He played high school ball at Denham Springs, right in LSU's back yard. He ends up going to South Alabama and was drafted 10th overall in the MLB draft last night. Anyone have any insight as to why he didn't become a Tiger?

Was a late bloomer I heard. Mainieri went on record saying he was one of the biggest misses in recruiting for the program. This happens to most programs nit just LSU. I remember Ben McDonald saying the same thing and he is connected to the Denham Springs program since he is a legend there

He’s probably over 5’8” and probably weighs about 190 - doesn’t fit into our scheme

We weren’t the only ones to miss. It appears that his last three were USA, UNO and SLU.

Swaggerty was undrafted out of high school

Bohm, the 3rd overall pick, was undrafted out of high school

Almost like it's hard to project 18 year olds and certain guys develop later than others or something

Not everything is a "miss" for LSU. Some guys just slip through the cracks.

That’s one of the problems of recruiting kids so early. You end up missing on a lot of late bloomers.

Blame the youth baseball system. It works against a kid who is either a late bloomer or really good all-around athlete. It favors the kid whose parents push baseball 365 days a year and don’t allow him to play any other sports. The vast majority of travel ball teams are made up of a bunch of 14 to 16-year-old kids who were not very big, but damn good baseball players for their age. The problem is they are not growing into the 6 foot two, 200 pound plus power player.

Always hate these how did they miss on him questions. They only have 11.7 scholarships per tem so presumably use up 3 to 5 per year. It might be a good idea to see who was actually signed that year. Bet most if not all were much higher rated at the time. Remember they have to juggle currrent roster makeup and positions , who is likely leaving the program for the draft or graduation and projecting who might actually sign and not head to pro ball .

There are numerous players signed by LSU over the years who were from some other teams backyard and then blew up into big time prospects after getting to LSU. We have to avoid tunnel vision on one player and look at the whole picture. LSU baseball seldom gets out recruited for a Louisiana player they really want.
