Pitching / hitting / execution

LSU can hand pick their players from almost anywhere in the gulf south, an area loaded with talent. How is it possible that we are in a situation where we are running out of arms for post season? We should be as deep as anyone in the country as far as pitching is concerned.
Clearly we recruit small guys to play small ball.. which is cool, however, that doesn’t work if the players you have can’t execute small ball type plays. We can’t bunt and it seems every time we attempt a hit and run our runner is thrown out.
I don’t blame the players.. CPM seems incapable of coaching to these guys strengths. I remember in 2000 when ULL went to Omaha.. they did it on small ball and I believe won a few games.
I’m frustrated

If Hilliard and Labas were healthy this wouldn’t be as much of an issue. They were shut down last week, it’s not like we have been this thin all year
And that’s not even counting the injuries to walker and storz
Every team has injuries, but recently our injuries have hit our best starter quality talent

Right, but you’re telling me the group of pitchers that are healthy can’t eat up innings and keep a game close? Our last pitcher should be an average NCAA pitcher at worst.
I don’t think CPM gets these guys enough work during the season. Experience is huge, we should have a bunch of guys with 20+ innings thrown on the season

But then people bitch when we lose midweek games
Kodros-Moffit-Petersen have all thrown about 9 innings each, I doubt another 11 innings pitched would allow them to be competitive with OSU hitters

Ehh you could also argue that he has coached these guys to get further than they should have two years in a row. IMO his fault lies in recruiting.

Also I think LSU is a victim of its own recruiting. I bet there are guys that attempt to walk on and are cut or walk on and make it that don’t get an honest shot to play significant time because scholarship guys always get the benefit of the doubt. I understand there is an investment in scholarship players but sometimes you get it wrong.. sometimes the walk on is hungry, maybe a late bloomer, whatever.
Maybe sitting a guy down for a few games will wake him up..

Very much a recruiting problem. He entrusted Sanchez with recruiting and that was a big mistake. The last two classes he had here were not the caliber we need hence the absence of impact juniors and solid seniors

Meh, weekends and post season is where it’s at.. no one will care about losing to Tulane on Tuesday night if you sweep Ole Miss on the weekend

They get even more pissed
“How can we sweep Ole Miss but lose to Tulane?”
I think it’s a moot point anyway. It’s a zero sum game. If you give Kodros-Moffit-Petersen 30 more innings that takes innings from other guys like Peterson with more potential who needed the work to develop. Would he be having this late season surge without it?

Well roster limits combined with injuries is why the pitching depth is down. Next years staff will be right back on track.
HOWEVER our lack of an offensive identity drives me crazy! I'm seeing other teams this weekend with guys batting in the 5-6 hole with over 50 RBIs and we have Jake slaughter out there with 28. Are we small ball? No we can't bunt. Do we run the bases well? Nope. Do we hit for gap to gap power? Eh not really. Do we have power? No way. Do we work pitchers with toughABs? Not exactly.
I can't tell you what it is we do well on offense

We really need a legit hitting coach. I agree with you

Yes, we do need a legit hitting coach. However, to CPM’s defense, he had to promote Gibbs last year when Cannizzaro left for State. He didn’t have another option.
After how good we were at the plate in 2017, how do you not give Gibbs another season. Then he blew out his knee, which forced him to promote Ochinko. If Ochinko remains the hitting coach next year, then I’d be frustrated.
We were still near the top of the SEC this year in batting, but this is the Rant. If we don’t win it all, we need to fire the coach.

I agree with you, I've commented earlier in the year about the players Manieri recruits. We are loaded with smallish shortstops from their perspective high scholls with below average power and what's worse is they are below average in bunting also, if you have no power then you damn sure better be able to hunt and run bases/steal, play small ball and manufacture runs. On the other hand, if you don't play small ball then please recruit some power hitters and give up a little defense for the offense.

It was one of our worst games played this season and probably one of their beat offensively for sure.
Yes we sure could have taken advantage of the first 3 innings and made this game close but baseball is a hit or miss type of sport. If we can get past NWS, then I suspect that our next game will be much closer.
You have to remember that we took these guys out of the CWS last year with an average team and one of their best teams. We don't have that type of talent this year plus we have injuries on the mound.
Next year should be a much deeper squad and we will make a run in 2019 IMO. Look at the difference in OM from last year to this year. I think LSU makes a very similar leap from 18 to 19.
Hess needs to return and with Cam Sanders, Fontenot, Stortz, Hillard, Labas, and the new pitchers coming in, LSU will be one of the deeper pitching staffs in the country not just the SEC. GT
This year just isn't our year but we could still make a run at this.

This myth needs to die, because
A) We recruit ATHLETIC guys to play great defense
B) WE DONT PLAY "SMALL BALL"
There are not only 2 styles of baseball; hitting a bunch of bmobs and bunting.

That’s just a nice way of saying we recruit small ball players. You are right we don’t play small ball but we have a team full of small ball players.

Who can’t bunt worth dick or hit and run worth dick.
The defense is also atrocious. This is the worst fielding team I’ve seen at LSU since smoke laval.

You realize the most talented hitter in the country and top 5 draft pick this week, OSU's Nick Madrigal, is 5'8"?
You also realize the best player we've had in the last decade was the same size.
