Why are Indian kids so over represented in the spelling bee?

Obviously, their parents push them to spell at a high level, but why?

In my ~20 years of working closely with Indian folks in the IT industry, I can assure you that they are generally no more intelligent than Americans...I would say they are less intelligent in some ways - possibly due to cultural communication differences, but I digress.

So what about the spelling bee is so obviously appealing to this group/race?

I work with a bunch of them. You give them some info and they will memorize that shite, but if something outside of that info pops up they are lost. I'd imagine the kids sit at home and just study it like crazy.

You get practice early if you are having to spell Chandrasekhar or Nahasapeemapetalan in a daily basis.

Because when there are 1.5 billion of you, anything to get ahead of the herd and stand out is worth pursuing?

That's probably the honest to God correct answer.

Exactly...and they lack any ability to infer.
You have to be super granular with your instructions.

Sounds believable considering the stories of Indians being able to recite Pi to hundreds or thousands of digits.

Impressive feat of memory but something highly unlikely to ever be useful in life unless you are a mathematician.

A. The people that you're referring to probably ARE Americans.

B. The doctor that will one day surgically help you remove your head from your arse is very likely going to be of Indian descent.

Actually, it’s known in the medical field that they typically make pretty crappy doctors. That’s why they end up at the VA.

You won't see these particular kids in the IT industry. They will be Drs.
