Need some insight. Have a square foot garden with about a dozen plants. One plant in the middle overnight withered up. It's a black beauty eggplant with flowers and one budding fruit. Around it I have tomato, peppers, other eggplant. All other plants look great and are producing. This one out of the blue overnight withered. Thoughts?

Don't know, I've got the same problemo. Got one tomato plant out of 6 that decided to whither away overnight. The rest are fine. Curious to see what other responses this thread can shine a light on.

How big is the plant? Did you check around the stem near ground level to see if anything has been gnawing on the stem and hurt it enough to kill it?

I've had problems in the past with cut-worms and other pests killing plants and depending on where you live, it could be rabbits or other animals getting to them.

I just had the same issue. I brought the plant to a LSU pathologist and said it was either fusarium or blight. No real way to treat it. Pull plants with symptomoligy and hope it doesn't affect the other healthy plants.

Had as many as 16 but the tomatoes get too crowded and blight gets to all. 12 works for me with a good spacing.

Here's the thing with tomato plants being that crowded. They promote fungal and bacterial issues very easily since they have heavy foliage and they don't have enough air circulation to help them dry quickly once wet.

I've found that whole "square foot gardening" works well for some things but not for all plants, especially ones that grow tall and especially in our hot, humid climate.

I put them in just before Easter. Normal looking growth about 3 feet tall loaded with flowers and one eggplant. The surrounding eggplants are different species and producing nicely. I pulled it and discarded. The base seemed to have a slimy substance but I had just watered so it may be the water. My tomato and peppers etc seem to be worm and pest free and are looking good.

It’s a borer. Check the stem near the ground level. Is it mushy? I find they attack swish, zucchini and eggplants more that tomatoes and peppers.

No. It is a term used for using one sq. ft. per plant. If you have a raised bed that is 4 ft. wide by 8 ft. long, the theory is you can plant 32 plants in that area.

If that were the case, I'd say the plant suffocated.
