similar to Allen Edmonds? Looking for a nice pair with leather soles and welted construction.

Why not just buy Allen Edmonds?

Much of J&M is junk but I do like certain shoes from their Italian line.

I understand. As mentioned Alden is probably the gold standard in America.

I was looking at Carmina recently.

If you want something different, maybe try a dark brown suede cap toe or even a wing tip. Too many brands to choose from, but something like this Carmina:

If you want bang for your buck, Lof & Tung is a new, and great, option. GYW, channeled soles, classic lasts. Carlos Santos is also a solid option (Carmina used to be the best "budget" option, but prices have crept up, and I am not a fan of their distribution).

Although I like some of Alden's cordovan and casual offerings, Alden's dress shoes leave a bit to be desired.

If you are willing to wait for a sale, Antonio Meccariello (available on Yeossal and The Sabot (DUX30 is a code)) are my current favorite. They can be had for the price of AEs, and the quality is through the roof.

and the Peru made Allen Edmonds were just crap
truer words never spoken, I got skewered on this board not long ago for saying some Allen Edmonds were shite. Some Cole Hahns are really good. Neither are as good as Alden and it really isnt a close race nowadays

Martin Dingman makes some fairly nice dress loafers. I personally cant pull off a loafer, but some guys can.

True dress shoes?

If you're looking for business casual shoes, check out Rancourt if you haven't.

I'll admit though, I've been wearing a couple different pairs of Cole Haan grands as much as possible lately. They look stupid and are probably going to fall apart, but they weigh nothing and are comfortable AF. Easy to get away with this time of year.

Magnanni are my favorites now and always get compliments. They are about $350 so not cheap but a more stylish look than AE.

its true baw, I got short legs and my slacks are not tailored well enough to wear a loafer where it looks good to me. I like a tiny bit of break on my trousers still and it looks like poo poo if you try to wear a nice loafer with em.

we all have our strengths, loafer wearing with dress wear aint mine.

Mezlan. The absolute best looking and most comfortable dress shoe I own. They are better, in my opinion, than my Allen Edmonds and Magannni shoes that I also own.
