Point is probably entertainment.

The only thing this movie can do is further annoy the fanbase and take a giant steaming shite on the characters TLJ didn't get thr chance to retcon or write into meaningless bullshite.

It may end up doing that but it is possible but it certainly doesn't have to.

I do agree that this one seems intended to be more of an action joyride starring one the best characters in the Star Wars universe than anything. It doesn't seem to be designed to be a "vital to the whole saga" backstory type movie. Even so, just a good action adventure about Solo would still be worthwhile if done right.

My 6 year old's favorite star wars character is Han Solo so we will be heading to the theaters to hopefully enjoy the show.

Just as a fun story to delve deeper into the character (at least I assume). A character driven story as opposed to a plot driven story - which is somewhat common in the fantasy genre, at least in books.

Movie may be shite but if it is, it won't be because we know that Han Solo survives in the end.

I agree. But that's not what this is.

Are you being obtuse? Sure, some random side character might die, but because it's a prequel, and the three main characters are still alive in the already produced sequels, there isn't any gravity to any situations Han, Chewie, or Lando get into. You know they make it out.

They're falling into the same trap the prequels fell into. Instead of making a completely unique story, they're trying to cash in on and lazily expound upon parts of the story that are already established.

If they wanted to make a Solo movie they should've made it with no other established characters or plot lines outside of Han. Instead the whole movie you're just waiting to see something that you already know happens.

You know he gets the Falcon.
You know he screws over Lando at some point
You know he and Chewey and Lando live.
You know he's the best pilot with the best ship.
You know he's an established smuggler.
You know he's going to stupidly cliché repeat shite like "I have a bad feeling about this"

There's no point to showing all that shite.

They could've just made a story about Han and a random heist by himself in a random ship. Craft an entire new world. Create their own stories. Meaningfully add to the legend instead of watering it down. Make up a new ship and new characters. But that takes risk and creativity and effort. Something Kathleen Kennedy and her studio don't understand. So they'll just dump out some corporate by committee garbage and bank on the Star wars name to make it profitable.

Did that affect your viewing of IW? We know they're all coming back, but it appears that audiences still loved that ending.

SPOILERS

You cannot compare a comic book world with comic book rules to a Scifi/fantasy world with a completely different set of rules.

Did you see the IW movie? Plenty of people died. I honestly expected Disney to PG the movie down and not let Thanos do anything of meaning. They did that to Ultron already. But in IW you watched Loki slowly suffocate and choke to death in a closeup as his eyes went red and then his neck snapped. That was an intense scene. He might be brought back to life later, but that's the rules that comic book universes occupy. And one of my biggest critiques of the Marvel movies have been a lack of gravity and real consequences.

Are you suggesting they'll kill Han and then have him brought back to life later? That's not how that universe works.

Infinity War is a comic book movie. Comic Book Heros dont die forever. But they do die in story lines. That's how comic books work. And IW was incredible.

The Star Wars Universe isn't a comic book universe. It's not the same few characters recycled for different story lines over decades. You can't compare those two things.

Further, they chose to pick a story line we already know the conclusion to with characters we already know and events we've already seen.

Contrast that with Rogue One. We knew where the movie was going, eveyone was going to die getting those plans to Leia.

But they created a new world and they used that new world to expand the universe. Outside of a cameo by Vader and takin, everything else was new. You got to see the remnants of a Jedi Temple, meet the guardians (Chirrut and Baze are my favorite new characters introduced outside of the OT), see how the death star was built and why the flaw was there, etc...

If it's good, great. I'll go see it. But TLJ put me off the main series. If Solo isn't good, it'll have a big weekend, then trail off quickly.

Anyone else see the SNL Saturday Night live skit this week?

Definitely doesn't increase my confidence in the Solo movie.

Not knocking your response, just the place I choose to respond. Solo looks terrible. They are trying really hard to replicate Ford's Solo which was effortless and not really scripted. This guy is trying and it doesn't work. Also, the trailer looks like all the other prequel trailers. Will miss.

Agreed. And you could say the same thing for Donald Glover.

I'll be boycotting this one in theaters to punish Disney for Rian Johnson. If enough people tell me it's great, I'll watch it. If it's meh, I'm not gonna watch it.

Ehrenreich was discovered at a friend's Bat Mitzvah reception by Steven Spielberg,[11] when Spielberg watched a comedy video created by Ehrenreich and a friend, "which began in the present and eventually cut to 20 or 30 years later, with Mr. Ehrenreich, in a kimono, screaming to stop a wedding." Ehrenreich has described the comedic performance he gave in the movie as, "I ran around as a skinny little punk, trying on girls' clothes and eating dirt." He was then contacted by DreamWorks, a studio which Spielberg helped found, and met with its casting director.[12][13] Spielberg said: "[Ehrenreich] was in a bat mitzvah video that my daughter acted with him in for their best friend. They showed me the video and I loved it and I got him an agent. That's sort of how it all began."

I’m sure it will make a lot of money.

Can only speak for myself and I have no intention of seeing this movie.

Did you see him in Hail, Caesar!?

Ehrenreich and Fiennes were the only great things in the film.

It seems that I disagree with every single thing you post on this board. As does most everyone else based on the down votes. I'm starting to suspect you're trolling.

Or are you just that wrong on so many things?

This whole story is as cringe worthy as the Lucas " it rhymes" BS

I discussed this over two years ago when Hail, Caesar! came out. If the movie's focus had been on Ehrenreich's character and his interactions with Fiennes' movie director character, it could've been a great comedy. Way before it was cool to hate on Solo.
