2018 NFL Draft: Final quick-snap grades for all 32 teams

New Orleans Saints
Draft picks: UTSA edge rusher Marcus Davenport (No. 14 overall), UCF WR Tre'Quan Smith (No. 91 overall), Florida State OT Rick Leonard (No. 127 overall), Wisconsin S Natrell Jamerson (No. 164 overall), Boston College DB Kamrin Moore (No. 189 overall), Louisiana Tech RB Boston Scott (No. 201 overall), LSU C Will Clapp (No. 245).
Day 1 grade: C-
Day 2 grade: A
Day 3 grade: C
Overall grade: B
The skinny: The Saints jumped up the board to get their man. Davenport is a talented player, but trading a 2019 first-round pick and a 2018 fifth-round pick to go get a raw pass rusher was a very heavy price. Alvin Kamara was acquired last April for a second-round pick this year, and after one year that seems like a great move. The Saints found depth at receiver with Smith, who presents a blend of toughness and speed. He should fit into the rotation this year and earn more playing time as his career progresses. Leonard is a former defensive lineman who is a project as a fourth-round pick, and probably was selected too early. Moore has the cover skills to complete for a roster spot this year. The Saints failed to hit multiple needs, however, including a developmental quarterback, defensive tackle, linebacker, and tight end.

Saints get an Overall Grade B. Day 1 is given a "C-", but should move to a "B", if Davenport helps Saints improve their sacks, and should go to an "A+" if Davenport gets 7 sacks his first year.

I love the draft as much or more than the next guy, but the media grading has always been lazy and hasn't evolved.
Pundits were ready to rejoice Saints moving up to #14, with the same trade, if the selection was Lamar Jackson. But since the selection was Marcus Davenport, it's too much.
They won't say Jackson remained until pick #32 and Davenport wouldn't have lasted to pick #18.
While they will admit now that there are 4 deal-breaker elite positions: QB, EDGE, CB, LT, that are worth the price... they dismiss Saints need for additional EDGE and prefer a replacement for Brees. It's dumb.

I do not think Jackson will be very good. He could be average or below avg. I expect Davenport to be much better at DE than jackson at QB.
3 years from now we will know.

Don't get the stance that trading up for Davenport lowers the Saints draft grade. The quality of the player's impact on improving the team is all that matters regardless of where he was picked. What they gave up for him is irrelevant this year. If Davenport was an A grade if chosen by the Saints or anyone else at a lower sport then he is an A grade today.

Everyone generally agrees the draft will be graded in years to come, but it is fun to initially grade each selection and team total. I have no issues with that.
But do it in context and be true to other narratives. If elite QB, EDGE, CB, LT are positions of importance, and a team has 3 of 4, should they be graded on not getting a 2nd elite QB or 2nd elite LT? Maybe EDGE has been missing and filling that with potential elite is the important piece.
Again, I think grading is lazy and hasn't caught up.
It's also hilarious that media chooses it's favorite sons. Pats pick Etling in 7th, behind Brady and Hoyer, but Saints screwed by not picking Brees successor.

What was the talking heads’ fascination with us and getting a QB? A specific QB...Lamar Jackson. That’s what I don’t get. Maybe he’ll pan out for the ravens, but I just don’t see Jackson in the black and gold.

Davenport, Smith, and Scott picks were good.... everything else was either a major reach or just totally shite...
not sure why they followed up last year's phenomenal draft with a seemingly half hearted effort...

At least it is not just us. Just read on Roto that the Giants had a terrible draft and IMO it was by far one of the best in the NFL on paper. Apparently if you dont go QB in round 1 with a QB in his mid to late 30s you have no chance at getting a grade above a C.
All the Giants did was draft arguably the best talent at RB since Adrian Peterson, took the no.2 OG in the draft, took Lorenzo Carter one of the better pass rushing LBs in the draft, traded a pick for probowler Alec Ogletree, draft a development QB with decent marks, then took a solid rotational DT that can play day 1.
Hilarious because the guy gave that draft a D and that was factoring in the Ogletree trade.

i know which positions were of need and which ones we didn't draft... that's the "effort" that i'm talking about here... DT, TE, QB... we needed either quality depth, future starters, or developmental guys there, and yet, neglected that in favor of positions where the need was not as great...

they aren't screwed totally, but they have backed themselves into a corner a bit, in regards to a successor for Brees...
next year is a weak QB class and we no longer have a 1st, so anything beyond the 1st very well could be the equivalent to the 4 or 5th this year... also, waiting till next year to draft one, that would be 1 less year under Brees, learning the position from an all time great, vs. if you pick someone this year...
not having that 1st rounder next year also removes ammo for a possible trade for a successor...
if we elect to not draft or trade for a QB at all before he retires, we will have to overpay in FA to get his replacement...

Dude, RB and OT were not positions of "need" last year and those picks went well for us. Drafting Deuce Mcallister (don't care if spelled wrong even though I should care) was not a position of need with Ricky Williams. They were literally going BPA, which is what they should do. Even with the 1st pick, they traded up and got the BPA at pick #14.

I don't think once we got out of the 10th pick there were any QBs worth getting to hope to build our future on. I agree and it would be nice to have picked a QB this draft or one of the last 2-3 drafts to groom but it didn't work out that way, definitely don't wanna reach for one. I can't think of the name but I believe Saints were gonna pick a QB last year that the team before them got, then Saints went with Lattimore.

yeah, they were.... RB, we had Ingram and washed up AP... OT, we had oft-injured Armstrong and aging Strief... neither position had any quality depth.... both were very big needs...

At the time, no they were not. There were way more positions of need for the Saints before last year draft than OT and RB.
