Why doesn’t New Orleans do more to attract middle-class home buyers?

It seems there are two types of people in New Orleans: extremely wealthy and those living off the system.
Looking at home prices down there is ridiculous. Their home prices are as if they think New Orleans is Boston or something. No wonder the town has no tax base and can’t attract people.
New Englanders are looking for excuses to move south. Houston, Dallas, Austin, Charlotte, Atlanta, Tampa, Orlando, etc etc all give them a reason to consider their town. New Orleans has similar prices to New England. There is no middle class in that city at all. People looking to escape inflated housing markets aren’t going to move to another one on top of the crappy public schools and the crime. New Orleans has the history and intrigue to market itself as one of these options but they price everyone out.
Face it; Louisiana needs more of a tax-paying population rather than 50% living off the system. We need outside influence to help our broken systems yet the only people New Orleans attracts are well-to-do-hipsters who will eventually go back to their rich families up north once they’re done ‘rebelling’ in the dirty south, and legacy culcha.
WTF New Orleans?

Income level does not necessarily equate to intelligence
ETA: or wisdom
ETA: I meant that as they are smarter than to move to NO

Pretty sure there may be a direct correlation between jobs and population growth.

You’re exactly right. Texas attracted companies who were tired of red tape bullshite, which lead to jobs, which lead to population growth in all of their major cities.
Again, Louisiana and New Orleans has done nothing to attract that.

They can't just invent a bunch of decent paying middle class jobs out of thin air

have you seen home prices for these cities?

Yeah but you get WAAAAYYYYY better services for your tax money (public schools, transportation, less crime, general cleanliness)

You need a “Middle Class” work force. Just go read the Smoothie King leaving thread.
Very few people want to live in dilapidated areas hoping others that want to improve the area will move there.
The politicians just want voters. The more free shite given away = votes. That free shite=taxes. People that actually pay taxes doesn’t necessarily want the free shite being given.

Those home prices increased with the demand. They started low though and increased as the market dictated.
Right now New Orleans has no demand to justify the housing market.

Which is sad because after visiting home the past 6 days, it did remind me of the charm NOLA can bestow on you. Louisiana should be just as prosperous as Texas in terms of multiple industries along with the backbone of O & G but the laissez faire attitude of native Louisianians will never allow that to cultivate.

All the middle class people live in Metairie.

Because the city government elected does't fit that kind of population..
Lakview and Mid City is basically New Orleans' middle class and its tax base...

You mean who the F is buying all of those $789,000 houses uptown? I find it insane too.

Isn't New Orleans growing at the same pace as Houston right now?
I always love comparing Houston/Dallas to New Orleans. Like comparing apples and meerkats.
