Wife wants to go. Im not motivated enough to go there. Seems overrated. We can fly dirty cheap cause my MIL works for major airline. If we go it will be the first and last time. The best and most affordable I've seen so far is the Outrigger Reef at Waikiki. Thoughts please?

I have no desire to go. However I’ve never heard anyone say it was anything other than amazing.

Suggestions or ideas from those who have been to Hawaii will be appreciated.

If you’re going all the way to Hawaii, go to some place besides Waikiki. Make a long layover in Honolulu & visit Pearl Harbor, but I wouldnt stay there on my first or only visit.

Maui, The Big Island, Kauai are all excellent and worth the long haul IMO. Check out Kaanapali Beach hotels (Maui). There are also several options on VRBO

I’ve spent a couple weeks in Kauai and stayed in Princeville. 2 weeks is way too long in Kauai. I’ve also spent a couple of days on Oahu and I stayed at the Hale Koa.

I’ll never go back to Hawaii to be honest. Zero reason to go there when Mexico is so much closer and much better quality.

Very much worth it. Do not stay in Waikiki, I repeat, do not stay in Waikiki. Go to Kauai and Maui/Northshore of Oahu. Kauai is the best place I have ever been.

Bingo! My thoughts exactly! Im still f'd cause my wife wants to go cause her parents have been several times. Of course, they fly free from Seattle to Hawaii and stay in $60/night motels.

In what aspect? Resorts? Cool, I guess, but the best part of places like Kauai is the untamed nature of it and no high rises. Pretty much everything else about Hawaii is better, although the water in Cabo is legit. You can get that quality in parts of Hawaii, though.

I've been 3 times. One of my favorite dreams is retiring there. If you decide to go, go to Pearl Harbor, see Waikiki, but do yourself a favor, and rent a house on the Oahu North Shore.

Maui (I recommend Wailea Beach) and Pearl Harbor are NOT overrated!

You have successfully affected a convincing air of way too cool for Hawaiian travel. I would not do anything I had already decided was overrated . Also going to Waikiki and saying you went to Hawaii is a bit like going to Biloxi and saying you were at the Gulf of Mexico .

If you go once go to Kauai or Maui and stay somewhere nice. It’s way better than you think.

Same here

Its funny, its never once come up on a possible destination for me and my family. Its so expensive and such a long flight, that we always choose to go to carribean or central America. I can be anywhere down there in 3 hours on a direct flight for a fraction of the cost, and same time zone most of the time. Thats a huge advantage for me.

Went there on my honeymoon. Beautiful place. Flight sucks. We will go again when the youngest kid is a little older but it’s not something I could see doing on a regular basis. It is definitely something to do at least once imo.

Mexico needs to get their act together though. I was there last Summer, had a great vacation. The Yucatan is on a brink though.

Honestly? No.... but it tends to one of those trips you feel like you gotta do at least once. You could have a much better time in the Carribean for what you spend on a Hawaii trip

Do you want to just lay on the beach? If so, go to the Caribbean or Mexico. Otherwise Hawaii is way more varied and interesting with cool microclimates and super varied terrain. You have just about everything in a very small area with tons of awesome hiking and things to do.

Unless you live on the west coast, the flights suck and the food is expensive. Worth it to me though.

Like others have said, it is a place you should try to go to at least once. I took advantage of a decent travel bonus in my CPA days and 6 nights free at the Hilton from points I had built up. We were young and went for our 3rd anniversary. If we decided to go again we would probably try for a cruise to see different islands, but for a first trip there, there is plenty to see around Honolulu. We hiked Diamond Head one day, went to the Kualoa Ranch another day, and did some other things. Spent a couple of full days at the resort and went somewhere for dinner that night away from the resort. My parents did a cruise there around Thanksgiving one year. Flew to Honolulu and stayed at the Hilton for a night or two, then got on the boat. They hit Maui, Kona, etc. With a full day at each stop.
