Are you referring to the play where Deichmann caught the accurate throw but decided to straddle the first base bag rather than put one foot on the bag?

Man, what kind of coaches did y'all play for growing up?

You know who was a prick? Coach Bertman. It doesn't matter now, because the man won championships. When Coach Mainieri starts winning again no one will care. I guarantee you most players don't. They've been judged harshly all of their young careers. It's what breeds excellence.

Wasn't Bertman widely praised for using something like "It's not your fault, I should not have recruited you to LSU"?

I played for several coaches who I seriously contemplated punching more than once.

And I damn sure didn't want to go back and work for them after I graduated. Mainieri has former players lined up wanting to work for him.

I think that was directed at Rick Greene in Greene's freshman year. After Greene had given up several runs early in a game Bertman went to pull him and told Greene, "I don't want you to think this is your fault. It's not your fault. It's my fault. I never should have recruited you."

That's part of LSU's problem now as well. Graduate assistants are fine, just not everywhere. He needs to make a couple of new hires.

We don't have any graduate assistants. We have one undergraduate assistant, Leon Landry.

That was my point. We need an actual, established hitting coach. Not former player after former player. Former players are fine as graduate (or undergraduate) assistants.

He also said “I want you to be my backup quarterback. Here is a swimming scholarship.” And that’s the main reason why any other quote of his has credibility.

I said this.

I understand walking the first guy to set up the DP

However he had him walk two straight. That’s 8 straight balls and loads the bases. Now he brings in a 5th infielder and the pitcher MUST throw strikes or else another walk beats you. He put all the pressure on LSU there.. the batter could just take until he threw a strike and the umpire could squeeze the pitcher. I hated the decision so much to load the bases intentionally.

Plus like he said, he’s not even use to closing games... so why make it even more difficult.

Oh well.

Mike Bianco's, a former LSU player, first paid job was as an LSU assistant coach. He was hired by Skip Bertram. He is now the HC at Ole Miss

Will Davis', a former LSU player, first coaching job was as an assistant at LSU under Mainieri. He is now the HC at Lamar.

Blake Dean's, a former LSU player, first coaching job was an assistant at LSU under Mainieri. He is now the HC at UNO.

Beetle Bailey had no college coaching experience before was hired by Skip out of high school to be the hitting coach in 1988.

Dan Canivari had no college coaching experience before Skip hired him out of high school to be our pitching coach.

Andy Cannizzaro had zero coaching experience when he was hired by Mainieri. He was the HC at Miss State, we all know why he was fired.

So please tell me why it's inherently dumb to hire assistants that were former players or guys without experience. This is college baseball. An assistant college baseball coaching job is the epitome of entry level, yes even at LSU. There are several hundred D1 programs. Outside unique situations like Dunn, if someone sticks around to become a veteran college baseball assistant, it's probably because he's not that great of a coach. Can you even name one college assistant off the top of your head that doesn't coach at LSU?

It's also as if some of you have forgotten or are flat out unaware that Micah Gibbs was supposed to be our hitting coach this year. He did a good job last year and unfortunately suffered an injury that forced us into a last minute hire. Ochinko was hired out of necessity.

THE MISTAKE was pulling Peterson who went one inning and quickly went 123 outs in bottom of 8th and putting in a pitcher who he did not really know was ON in bottom of 9th to protect a great rally and win........

But PM has a history of this kind of gambling pitchers all the time -taking one out after one highly successful inning and gambling on the next untried pitcher.....

The other pitching insanity is allowing a pitcher to get so far in over his head with earned runs and with loaded bases and expects good results with next reliever......

When the players come through with a great rally and the coach blows it such insanity takes the wind out of the players’ spirit and then they think rallies don’t mean shirte

Show me where I said it was dumb to hire former players as assistants. Hitting coaches are not assistants.

It's not your fault, son. It's my fault for recruiting you.

Last year Mainieri had great players.

There are only 1-2 that might make it to the bigs. So no, they weren’t great. They were solid college players.
Name me who was great? Alex L. Who else MIGHT MAKE IT? Pap? Freeman? Not likely, Poche? Not likely, Kramer? No., Walker? Maybe if he recovers., those are the ones off the top of my head.
