I do not think that PM is the problem with the baseball team. My Lord, he just led them to the CWS finals last year. But, he said something after the Tulane game that he shouldn't say. At the end of the game, he walked the bases loaded playing for a DP. I forgot who he brought in to get the ground ball but the kid walked the run in.

PM said, "that was my mistake... evidently our pitcher isn't capable of pitching in that situation."
that wasn't necessary but he does that at times. Just take the blame and move on.

Bear Bryant used to say, "If we win... the team won. If we lose, I did a poor job of coaching."

Did you mean to say "is not" capable?

PM never does anything wrong. He loves to throw players under his bus.

Maineri is a prick. I don’t know how that’s up for debate at this point.

People dont care about pricks as long as they win though.

ok...

But, if we are discussing what's wrong with the team, it has a lot more to do with the pitching staff's inability to pitch in pressure situations than it does with Mainieri being a dick.

I don't think I've seen a week worse for the pitching staff than this past week.

That's not exactly what Mainieri said. You omitted a critical part of his statement which I've underlined below.
quote:

“Obviously, I did the wrong thing walking those batters,” Mainieri said. “It put too much pressure on our pitcher who just wasn’t capable of throwing strikes under those conditions.”

Mainieri said the bases loaded situation "put too much pressure on our pitcher." Now he knows.....

It doesn’t make it all that much better. PM has a history of not taking any responsibility. He’s a dick.

Dan, with all due respect, you're an idiot.

Actually it does. His point was he (Mainieri) made the mistake of putting too much pressure on the pitcher. He took the blame for it.

In his first few years at LSU, coach PM use to take the spare tire from the bus and throw both the player and the tire under the bus at the same time. He's gotten better over the years. Now he doesn't throw the spare tire under the bus with the player, he just throws the player.

Ah, another classic fan trope. Either said coach throws his players under the bus, or he isn't critical of them enough. No in between.

This.

We knew Saban was a prick when he was here. It’s just that he was our prick.

PM has always called players out in public. He’s just one of those coaches.

We hate coaches when they "hide the real issues" and then we hate them for being honest. Man we are hard to please.

Has Paul been a dick in the past? Yes

Was he being a dick in this situation? No, as he is telling you he screwed up and took responsibility.

Let’s get it right if we are going to have this discussion:
1. Beck has been used all season in pressure packed situations and up until that point has proven more than capable of getting out of that with a ground ball. So he chose him with the information he had as we all would.
2. He was upset with Fotenot who had the walk.
3. He was obviously pissed when they interviewed him as he should have been.so maybe he didn’t say exactly what he wanted or maybe he is trying to light a fire under their asses. Either way, it was what it was.

Let’s loom at what happened yesterday...
His 3 best options all year out of the pen gave up 8 freaking runs at the end of the game. That’s not on him... He has to manage what he has and those guys didn’t leave him any options.

“I was afraid they were going to squeeze bunt to try to win the game and I wanted to have a force out there,” Mainieri said of his decision to intentionally walk two batters. “We were getting to the bottom of the order. Their last two hitters are batting .211 and .188. I figured if we’re going to lose, we’ll lose to those guys. They put in a pinch hitter who was hitting under .200. But there’s no defense if you can’t put the ball over the plate.”

With the bases loaded, LSU brought Watson in from center field as a fifth infielder as Tulane’s Luke Glancy came to the plate. The choice didn’t matter, as Beck walked home the winning run on four pitches. After the game, Mainieri admitted fault for the choice to intentionally walk the two batters, saying it put unnecessary stress on Beck.

“Obviously, I did the wrong thing walking those batters,” Mainieri said. “It put too much pressure on our pitcher [Beck at that point] who just wasn’t capable of throwing strikes under those conditions.”

Still, Mainieri pointed to Fontenot’s walk to Artigues as the team’s “undoing,” saying LSU should’ve chosen to attack the hitter instead of pitch around him. Once Artigues walked, Mainieri said, Fontenot was in a “difficult situation” and wasn’t able to recover.

Yea...I've always had that bone to pick with pulmonary. Pissed me off when he called out Deichmann 3 years ago at first base.

Mainieri is like Saban, recruit great players and you look great. Average players make you look average. LSU doesn’t have great players. In other words great players hide coaching deficiencies. Even Saban makes coaching mistakes, however 5 star recruits help compensate for them. Last year Mainieri had great players.
