This fall’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be multiplayer-only, lacking the kind of single-player campaign that has been a key component of the annual series for over a decade, two sources familiar with the game tell Kotaku, corroborating a report published earlier today at Polygon.

One of those sources also echoed a report from top Call of Duty information-broker Charlie Intel saying that the new game will have a battle royale mode. That’s the kind of last-player-standing mode that’s been taking over gaming for the past year, what with the success of Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds, Fortnite: Battle Royale and myriad competitors. So far, no big-budget game studio has added a Battle Royale mode to a big franchise series, but it has seemed like only a matter of time before it hits a Call of Duty or a Battlefield, a Division or a Destiny.

Battlefield could probably make a legit battle royale game.

my first thought was to ridicule this..but.. probably a good idea and could be fresh and fun for the franchise

Depends on what they charge for it.

I mean, would it really make a difference? The campaigns are like 2 hours long and insanely easy. They’re not immersive or any kind of fun to play at all after like 20 games. Doesn’t make a lick of difference and is probably a smart decision so they can focus on multiplayer polish.

He's off somewhere mumbling about switchable keyboard schemes, I hope.

The only thing the campaign really did was give reviewers one more thing to complain about anyway. Nobody buys COD for the campaign. I haven't played any of these new shooters. What's different between the battle royale stuff and like search and destroy? Is it just the same thing but no objective to destroy? Or no teams as well?

I'm all for the no campaign if it means an overhaul of multiplayer in the franchise. I enjoyed WWII for a few months, admittedly, but got burned out on it pretty quick. It was still my favorite COD in quite a few years. I think BLOPS4 has a huge chance to be one of the franchise's best installments ever, especially if they change up multiplayer and how it functions. I couldn't care less about the campaigns, it's all about multiplayer when it comes to COD for me. I've yet to play PUBG or Fortnite, and most likely never will. But I could see myself fully enjoying a battle royale game mode.

I admit, I enjoy COD single player campaigns. I usually buy older titles because they are cheaper, for the single player campaigns. I don't bother playing online anymore.

I'm not very familiar with the battle royale style games but I play Battlefield and used to be into COD. Can someone explain to me how that works? When I die, do I have to sit and watch other people play until the match is over? That sounds absolutely miserable.

Isn't that what's said for every installment when it's announced?
