I just recently heard the term microburst. I figured if they were frequent in Louisiana I would have heard about them before late 20’s.

I'm pretty certain they can occur anywhere.

I'm pretty sure most people living in the New Orleans area were familiarized with the term "microburst" in July of 1982. I know you weren't born yet, so Google Pan Am 159.

I believe one occurred in BR on Florida near Little John not too long ago.

Ripped the roof off an apartment complex.

Never heard of "microburst", but after reading the link.... I'm familiar w/ "straight line winds", which (according to link), are result of a microburst.

Have been fascinated by them and wondered why you don't hear alot about them. Always assumed they happened mostly in Arizona.

Microbursts are native to Africa and were brought over by slave traders in the 1800s. Microbursts are actually considered an invasive species, so if you encounter one you should kill it on sight.

Delta Flight 191 in 1985 at Dallas was the crash that seemed to really put a spotlight on microbursts.

That and Pan Am 759 changed a lot in regards to microburst monitoring.

It’s called wind shear baw , at least that what they called it back when the plane crashed in Kenner in 1982. Later they started calling it micro burst or down drafts.

Yes. We had one in a bad storm in 2014 that knocked several trees down in my neighborhood.

You talking about that one in / about 83 ish? If so, never will forget it. Was in high school, working at the hospital (east Jeff), hear about a plane crash, hospital goes into “get ready for plane crash” mode, and nothing happened because everyone involved died. IIRC, killed a few ppl on the ground in Kennah too. Don’t remember the total number dead, just remember it was a big number / really sad.

Maybe so for you and most of the nation, but people around MSY got educated on it in 1982.

MSY was either the 1st or 2nd commercial airport to get a Doppler radar system, which was more capable of detecting microburst activity. It seems like I remember it being installed just a year or two after the Pan Am crash, but that was ~35 years ago, so perhaps my memory is confused.

Where 777Tiger when you need him? He could probably clarify the timeline. If my memory is correct, he was a plane or two behind Pan Am 159 waiting to takeoff.

You’ve never heard of microbursts or derechos?

We had a bad derecho up here about 15 years ago that crippled the city for a month.

We got one a few years ago in Northern Virginia. Most violent storm I’ve seen up here. Our power was out for five days and some areas were without power for well over a week. It was 95-100 every day the power was out. Miserable. There were trees down everywhere.
